So which Conference sides are you looking forward to us playing next season? Portsmouth v Forest Green should be interesting.
I meant if Forest, who are currently 1st, get promoted. We have no chance of promotion, play-offs or otherwise, unless something drastically changes.
This is part of a post I did on the Argyle board last week after our match.... "If, and it's a big ask, Portsmouth can take this game into the rest of them then they will go up. No good being good one week and average the next". The post was in praise of the way you played at our's and that you were by far the best side we had faced so far. I just don't get it. Your results are so inconsistent. Teams can have an off day of course they can but you have enough class on the pitch to make it rare. What is it then? Over confidence? Can't be lack of it surely. Poor tactics? I can't see that after our game either. It just beggars belief.
Talk about a game of two halves - first half Pompey were excellent and if we'd taken our chances would have been 3-1 up, but the goal we conceded was so poor - I'm over 50 and would have closed down their goalscorer quicker than our defence did. All that was positive off the back of going behind was there was no panic and we played our way back into the game. The second half though was incredibly poor - we never got going - and yes some of that was down to County and the ref and a lot of stop starting. That said their 2nd goal may have had a foul in the build up but we seemed to be outmuscled for it and then it was take your pick as to which one of 3 was going to slot it home. The substitutions (Stevens excluded) were I'm afraid bizarre in my eyes and with them for me went any chance of equalising. The ref had a very strange last 10 mins when other than him I am not sure anyone knew what or why he was making decisions on - really random freakout. We huffed and puffed but it was all a bit predictable - County must have gone home thinking we came for a point and got all 3 - they executed their game plan very well and we I'm afraid can't just show up for 45 mins - PC needs to think about breaking the mould and playing Connor with somebody and heaven forbid even consider subbing Roberts who I felt looked worn out at 70mins. Plus points Lingzani - excellent today and Burgess really solid although could have done better with the second. Long way to go to watch it and a great turnout (again) - but I did drive home thinking glad I didn't quite manage a season ticket this year.
I haven't managed to get to any games so far this season, so this is mainly from listening to the radio and chatting to mates - but one of the problems seems to be that if we face a team who lets us play football, on the ground, we do very well - but we aren't bullish enough/too lightweight against the more physical teams. Cook also refuses to sub or not play certain players eg Roberts and Doyle, and our defence is a bit poorer this year having lost Ben Davis. No idea what happened for the second half - unfathomable.
Last season, not to put too fine a point on it, Argyle ran out of steam big time except maybe the playoff games to reach Wembley against you. Up to Christmas we were cruising and everything looked good. We had a side of relatively decent class players for this league a number of which were young loanees. The wheels came off and we crumbled. Some of the loanees we had come to rely on didn't come back and when we eventually got one he was not the same player for us. This season our Manager learned a lesson from that. He got rid of a number of lightweights and got in a number of more robust players with a bit of pedigree. We are definately stronger than we were last time and therefore more likely to last the course. Adams learned that you need a certain kind of player. Watching your players last week I thought they were very good on the ball and with their passing etc. But, one thing did come across and that was after about 70 minutes they looked knackered. Shock horror Cook substituted two of what had been your best players up to that point. He was right I think because they both looked dead having given a lot of energy. They come into the lightweight category for me and as the season goes on I think they will tire even more. You do need a couple of big bastards at the back who can command and keep clean sheets or low scores against. This gives freedom to the flair forwards and others. Maybe you don't have that and Cook didn't learn from last time. Your team looks very similar to then. I don't see your team every other week like you people so it's just an observation from one game and results I see all too often. You will know better than me if this is bollox or has a basis of truth in it.
Agree with your comments Eastney. Milan Lalkovic should have replaced Kyle Bennett much earlier than he did, and this may well have been a match for Michael Smith to use his height against their centre halves, replacing Gary Roberts. Notts County were an average side, and this was a match we should have won. P.S. Stop coming on here gloating, sensible
I haven't seen Pompey since a certain game in April 2012!!!! However, I do keep up to date via the net, comments and reports. While the players may have changed, the sense of failure is forever in the air. Ever since I was an 8 years old, Pompey have tended to finish in the botttom half of the table of whatever division they have played in, Since about 1961, spanning 55 seasons I would say on at least 40 occasions the position has been below half way , hence my commnet about Pompey being a failing club. So Cook, the Directors and supporters need to change that mentality by finishing as close as possible to the promotion places for that mentality to disappear.
I promise there is no gloating Wooperts. I genuinely don't get why you get a couple of good results and then balls it up again. You don't belong in this league even if there is no divine right for anyone to get promoted. The one thing I've learned from the past 5 seasons is that it's nice to see your team play pretty football rather than lump ball but you also need to be able to grind it out when required. Your team have been one of the best we've played each season for the past few years but the fact we are both still here says a lot. I actually think the penny has dropped with Adams but I'm not so sure it has with Cook yet. He maybe needs to sacrafice his beliefs for a while and play percentages instead.
