Watched the heartbreaking story of the family who lost mum to cancer then 2 years later her young son died also.......couldn't watch anymore after that
http://www.bbc.com/sport/rugby-union/37738615 Meanwhile down under, the All Blacks continue to show theiir brilliance with a record-breaking 18th consecutive win. Well done to them and long may the New Zealanders' continue to reign over us all given their superb brand of rugby that is so captivating, exhilaring, outstanding. I do wonder if the French have learned anything from the hammering inflicted on them in last year's world cup, or do they still think their stodgy 10 man rugby is the way that thrills the crowd and is the way forward?
OK Mods. Is it worth creating an thread called "General Sports" as there might be a plethora of comments about the US formula 1 race as Hamilton gets beaten again tomorrow interspersed with comments about the brilliance of the latest FIFA game or travel In this thread users could contibute to commenting on rugby, basketball, horseracing, tennis, and F1 because as it stands when you go to the off-topic thread, one comment might be about beating cancer, the next one will refer to something totally unrelated. I know there will be objectors who think there are too many individual threads but look at the Sunderland and Liverpool boards and there are a plethora of off-topic issues. We could give it a trial period but if it upsets too many then close it. However, somehow I doubt it given the breadth of other sports that Saints fans like.
I didn't watch it, so I can't comment on the programme, but have witnessed the devastation of losing family members, from this horrible illness. I also have to say that some of the cheeriest and happiest people I have met, in recent years, are cancer sufferers. So many, after the initial diagnosis and the despair of being told that their illness is terminal, prove themselves to be some of the bravest people around. I have a friend in Portugal, who has been battling cancer for 16 years, yet she still works and maintains such a happy demeanour that she has become a source of inspiration to me. She is about to start yet another 6 month course of chemotherapy, but still remains upbeat. My own wife, who was given 6-12 months to live, in August 2014, is still going strong, although we are both aware that her type of cancer will return and will eventually end her life. Living/dealing with cancer, isn't a picnic, but my wife and I are just living in the moment, and enjoying the stay of execution, brought about by the fantastic care received from the NHS, a very good oncologist and a determination to try to live as normal a life as is possible.
Yeah, I knew about your wife due to us chatting about it before. Glad she is still going strong. As you know I have been effected as well, my uncle and his wife both died of cancer, my cousin who is like my older brother is now dying from it. The NHS and Macmillian have been brilliant on all three occasions. Sadly Stand up to Cancer has the same flaws Children in Need etc have. Which is celebs beg the general public to donate, but then give **** all themselves. They had a celeb version of Gogglebox and Vardy, Oxo and Sturridge in it. When they showed them one of the terrible cancer stories Oxo and Sturridge looked near to crying. Were Vardy looked like he didn't give a ****.
I find my non wi-fi connected fridge to be excellent in its service. There are just some things that don't necessarily need to be in the next wave of stuff that goes online. The best thing about fridges and freezers is their utter reliablity [cue my own kit breaking down now], and it's their simplicity which makes them that way. No need to make them more sophisticated. Now making them even less polluting, that's a great goal. I acquired the skill of knowing when food was starting to get past its best, over a few years, during my teens and twenties. It's a good skill. It means you end up appreciating what food is and where it comes from. A wi-fi connected fridge effectively removes the need to acquire that skill. I'm not ready to surrender my resourcefulness to a piece of smart white goods. Not for a few decades at least.
I'm fine with it, as long as we can keep all the non-football and cricket chat on there and not on this thread. As you say, it will help keep this thread on a fewer number of subjects at one time. I won't sticky it though, as we have about the maximum number of stuck threads at the moment. Over to you to start it then Ides.
I bought several Liebherr fridges when I was managing the lab. A lab-spec fridge would cost about 5 times what we paid for a domestic Liebherr, but the performance was just as good.
I refuse to be outsmarted by a fridge. It's bad enough with my son telling me that food is inedible at midnight on the expiration day without smart aleck white goods joining in.
My daughter is the same. I tend to let food walk out of the fridge by itself rather than actively expel it on grounds of an arbitrary date.
Yesterday evening I made some cheese and crackers. Gorgeous, perfect Camembert. Ate three large chunks before Mrs O asked me if it was a little rich. Checked the date, 19.8.16. 24 hours later and still alive... lordy that cheese was tasty. Vin
