Yes, I you're right. A really good display indeed. Reminded me of that League Cup fixture against Arsenal a couple of seasons ago, away at the Emirates, when I found myself boggling slightly over how good we were. Back then we scored a couple of goals to win. This time we just couldn't put the chances away, and got punished.
We are all disappointed with the result but that was a massive lesson that Saints and their fans had tonight playing against a club that has had 50 years playing European football at some level. Inter know how to slow the game, fake fouls, bore the living daylights out of their own supporters never mind those of their opponents. For what it is worth, I think we should have "asked" Inter to do the attacking in the first half. Playing at the pace Saints did in that first half, Inter gradually drew the Saints sting. Bit unlucky not to get the equaliser in the 2nd half but the keeper played a blinder and to my mind Saints lacked a little bit of sophistication by lobbing the ball into the box, which is exactly what Inter expected. Thought Ward-Prowse played well but I feel he could be better utilised as a playmaker a la Fabegas and the great Alan Ball.
Yes. He seemed to grow into the game a bit as well (as much as you can when you only play 20 mins or so). Wonder whether he'll be fit to start against Man City. Maybe just a longer appearance from the bench.
Very true. All the dirty tricks and timewasting came out of the bag. I'm not sure that the dismissal even helped, as their mindset went even more negative.
We've seen recently that they are far from invincible. I know it's in their back yard but I'm quietly confident for that one. Just have to be putting these chances away, it's becoming our main problem. Even against Burnley where we got three it really should have been much more and the quality of finishing was poor
Ironic that our "best" player was the one that had a moments lack of concentration! No Manager can legislate for that, you say we didn't take our chances, but how much was down to bad luck and good defending, and did someone mention that the Referee got a lot wrong?
Hahahaha, just having a chuckle to myself that we're all gutted about losing to Inter Milan at the San Siro, in a game we dominated.
Pretty gutted to lose that, thought we were by far the better team. Still in a good position, though.
