    Good afternoon Kustard.

I've offered one already. Some unemployed lack very basic English and maths skills so working on these would make them more employable and help maintain some mental activity while off work. Perhaps they'd let you join in to brush up too.

As Fowler says, lots of unemployed people don't lack such skills but could use the time to improve in other areas. Computer skills, particularly Excel would benefit anyone in an office job. They could re-train, particularly those unemployed due to shifts in technology or U.K. industries becoming uncompetitive such as a bloke who has worked on a now closed steelworks for decades.

The problem with my idea is it would require some investment and would be seen by you and Mail readers as soft. Long term, however, it would create a more skilled workforce and not seek to humiliate people.

It's been tried over here, the last time was only a couple of years ago, and it was scraped shortly afterwards.

It's nothing new. The Tories introduced "Employment training" back in the late 80's, it was training on day release and a placement in work. You got dole money plus a tenner. Employers got virtually free labour and the Tories mates who ran the 'training' agencies became multi millionaires off the back of it.

Have you ever heard of the word - demeaning btw?

Most (Not all) long term are just lazy and know how to play the system, give them a bit of hard labour first, then offer them some education.

You know all the long-term unemployed then. Do you meet them all at the Job Centre?

It looks like PowerSpurs has taken my advice and accepted that thinking is not his strong point
He seems to have given up offering policy ideas because his ideas simply dont make sense

So the ones who aren't lazy and feckless should have to be demeaned by sweeping the streets for their benefits as well then?

Or will you have some form of feckless meter that picks out the lazy ****s?

You say that like it's based on some sort of fact.

On the off chance it is true, what does the "hard labour" achieve apart from making May look like Stalin?

Of course some people play the system as they have done since the system came into existence. Offer them a carrot for getting into work rather than beating them with a stick for not having work and you'll get better results, albeit with a bit of intelligent thought required along the way.

Why not harness their electro magnetism and turn them into living, breathing batteries like in The Matrix......maybe a new renewable energy source?

So they don't get any money than they do now but mysteriously can afford to pay people to look after their sick children. And there is no cost because they don't need equipment, training or supervision for their work and we can now also afford to train other unemployed people in childcare. Its so well thought through isn't it?
If the number of tax inspectors was increased, people would apply for the jobs creating vacancies further down the chain which would create real jobs for the unemployed. The new tax inspectors would more than pay for themselves by reducing the money lost to the exchequer. Win-Win-Win

Pete doesn't like tax inspectors, as he spends his days creating accounts for low end punters in SW London.

Imagine spending a career helping reduce peoples tax 'burden' then bleating about people taking the piss out of the system.....

    Typical Tory

Hard labour is a bit too strong a word, I should have said manual work.

I agree with what you say, but you are dealing with the ones who play the system, give them a shock first, manual labour first then offer them some education, else its back to more manual labour.

We like to spend Fridays calling each other ****s, especially Pete, as he can't see what we're posting which makes it more amusing.

I said the state would provide childcare. How come you seem incapable of understanding that simple concept?
Yes, the state can afford to buy a brush and rubbish sacks. I dont think you need training to use a brush - unless you are stupid - let me ask, are you long term unemployed? There are supervisors already. It certainly is well thought out. Pity you are incapable of thinking.
You dont just ask people to apply for tax inspector jobs. Even if you are working for HMRC, I dont think there are any people below that level who are "nearly Tax Inspectors". I agree that there has been too much cutting at HMRC though. The new MTD initiative could be extended and make it easy to look at documents and accounts over the internet.

I take it as a compliment that they make no sense to you! You would have to have a full understanding of the way, economies, government and people's behaviours interact.

I use labourers though and a good number of English lads just don't give a **** and they're not worth being there and often don't even turn up.

    Generalisation of course.

Eastern Europeans often more reliable and on average work slightly harder.

Plenty of **** ones though too.

Was on a site recently where a Lithuanian spat in the face (twice) of a big black British demo guy = got smacked in face.

Both fired which was a shame. Black bloke a good, decent man.

Not sure why it happened but do know the Lithuanians were lazy, rude bastards having worked around them over the past year and spokem about how useless they were to the big fella and I guess he told them what he thought.

Worked on another site though and good friends with a couple of them. Nice guys and work really hard.

    Pot luck.
