My kids know that they are welcome to whatever is left when I'm gone. However, they are also aware that I don't intend to live my life on the basis of what's going to be left for them to inherit.

Kustard's not arsed about taxation, as he's on tax credits.

I reckon he'd probably have a different outlook on the inconsistencies and fairness within the system if he paid top rate tax like.

Exactly. I've never dropped for a bean in inheritance and likely never will, I've told my lot the same as you have.

They're all making their own way in life anyway.

I remember an article some time ago from a journalist whose property had gained in value, making him a millionaire. His point was that despite being a millionaire, he couldn't afford carpets for his house. Most people had a better standard of living, and quality of life as well as more disposable income than him, and they contributed more to the economy.

He was effectively a worthless millionaire in financial terms.

If it was really that bad, he could always sell up and downsize and move to a smaller place or a large place further out :p

Hell he could even sell it and buy 2 and rent one out!

There were other issues that prevented that for him, I forget what though. It would certainly have been a prime thought for me.

A fair amount of time, an expensive house is a costly way of living next door to a tosser.

Comparing the EU to a world war against Nazis who were invading countries, slaughtering millions in gas chambers and threatening to destroy democracy on a world wide level suggests that this is a very poor analogy

As I said earlier that's common place amongst the 'old money' set. Paper millionaires without a pot to piss in, asset rich, cash poor. They feel a responsibility to the family name of keeping these big old creaking houses going, but can barely afford to heat the bloody things.

Well i have no sympathy. They are fortunate to be in that position and if they do not have the sense to understand they cannot afford to keep the family house/estate because they do not earn enough then they should suck their pride in and do what is correct for them as they are still better off than most.

I know someone who lives like that, and whilst it's easy to say it's a proper first world problem, I actually do have some sympathy for him. As he's inherited an estate that's been in his family since the late 1600's and letting it go simply isn't something he can contemplate. So he drives a 15 year old wreck, closes off more than half the house and is desperately trying to find ways to create income off the estate in order to keep it going. Don't forget these big estates have people who work directly or indirectly (tenant farmers) for them, as so he feels a massive sense of responsibility to them as well. His life would be a piece of piss if he sold up, took the cash and did one, but that's not how most of that sort think in fairness. I quite admire him, even though he's a Tory toff.

You mean back in the good old days, when you were in your 40's, and they had two world wars resulting in 80 million deaths....seems wicked smart <ok>
