You're at retirement age, and what you really mean is, that you can't afford to get off the hamster wheel and retain your current way of life. Which probably explains the jealousy that you've displayed to both Paul and NSIS before him when they've spoken about being retired early.

Let's hope in your case it's sooner rather than later.

You've probably buried it in the garden. Next to your first wife.

So do I but the current arrangements for CGT and Inheritance tax effectively mean that anyone who bought a house in the last 25 years has a windfall gain caused by the Govt running the economy in a way that caused house prices to increase. That means every house owner has an incentive to continue voting for policies that restrict house building and hurt the poor. Its a more lunatic policy than anything Corbin has come up with, but somehow is mainstream without challenge. If you bought an average house in Mitcham 25 years ago this gain in real terms is probably about £250k. Why should this be tax free?

We could build 2 million more homes over the next few years and house prices wouldn't fall, as the developers wouldn't sell them below the current market value and the increased availability wouldn't see an over supply that would reduce the demand, as there's still so many who are desperate to get on the housing ladder.

Rising house prices, particularly in London has been driven by wealth creation within the UK populous combined with overseas money flooding in.

Increased death duties isn't going to alter that in any way, shape or form

    Yes and No.
I don't buy my family gifts, or have a tree up and whatnot, but I do go see my family and have a Turkey dinner.

To be honest, central London is becoming less and less inhabited by The British,

An increasing percentage of central London is in foreign hands. One source estimated that between 2009 and 2015 foreign owners spent over £100bln on central London property.

Working in the building industry I can also confirm a lot of the work is carried out by not UK nationals.

specialist trades tend to be carried out by British people instead and management roles.

I generally agree with this. But its just a matter of fairness to tax windfall profits on domestic property and Inheritance Tax is the best way

Couple of things. From next year people on benefits will only get money for first 2 kids.
Secondly inflation is an average of all goods but we are heavily reliant on imports for food so poor are likely to be worse off but far less so than those who are low paid and only just outside means tested benefits

I didn't know that about the benefits levels. So are you saying they'll only get additional cash if they produce 2 more offspring whilst claiming? Or the you'll only get paid for 2 full stop? The latter sounds a tad harsh should you be a working man with 4 kids who loses their job.

My view is that your benefits level should be set based on the number of kids you have when you start to claim. If you choose to have any more whilst still claiming, no more cash. That way benefits claimants will have to make the same decision that working families have to i.e. can we afford another one? At the minute the system doesn't give them any fiscal responsibility for that decision. They did similar about 20 years ago in Washington iirc and the birth rate amongst the unemployed tumbled

The last sentence is completely right and yet another example of the 'middle' being squeezed hard in times of austerity

Yeah have a 5 year old, and another daughter due in 3 weeks.
My daughter gets plenty of presents, just not from me. I spend a fortune on her on the other 364 days of the year anyway :)
My parents and my wifes parents spoil her rotten, as does both mine and my wifes brothers.

    I suppose.
I love what Christmas stands for, to be honest, the food, the TV specials, being with family etc.
Just feels hypocritical of me to say I am atheist, then wave a Christmas banner.

The Daily Mail set would be up in arms mate.

Is it fair though? If you work hard and buy a house that stretches you financially over many years of paying the mortgage off, is it right to then say that the market value gain you make on the property at some later date should be massively taxed? Surely you then stifle aspiration and encourage the rental market to flourish as you've removed one of the prime reasons fhome ownership?

Inheritance tax already sits at 40% of anything over £325k and personally I think that's about right
