I think that's fair Bob. I once tried a separate naps thread because I couldn't guarantee to pick out all contenders from the DT but it didn't work out. The only thing that will work is to extract from the DT. It will only work if everyone just continues to use the DT as normal but it shouldn't be too much of a hardship to indicate one's best 2 bets of the day within that. I rarely put anything up and when I do it isn't usually much of a price. I don't intend to change my ways and I wouldn't expect anyone else to change theirs. If you are happy to scan the DT and pick out bets you feel justify a special mention that's great. The ones that are easier to locate are where someone replies to a post with a congratulatory comment, but not all get noticed or referenced in that way.

Bob, best to have no rules. Just let the DT carry on as is and you pick out the bets you feel justify congratulations. As has been said, we don't want the pattern of selections to change. When you see a comment like "Shout xxx" or "nice one xxx" or "<applause><applause>" etc. have a look and see if it's worth extracting for special comment (would rely on someone congratulating but that's usually the case). Have a look at a random week from previous DTs and test it out. If you miss any the individual can always PM you (best not to have queries in the thread itself or it will soon die)

PS and don't call it a competition. It's simply you giving additional acknowledgment for good tipping and it's at your discretion.

Could be a lot of work for you, Bob? Personally, I would think a nap and a n.b. (as Rudey suggested) would be more than enough. Indeed interested what the majority think. No, goodness me, don't let's call it a competition, we have plenty of those already (which are well supported).

What I'd love to see on here is a Tip of the month, like the ATR ride of the month. Someone nominates a DT thread tip and then at the end of the month they get a thread where we vote for the best selection. They go forward for the wine at end of season.

That's a decent suggestion although i imagine it's going to be won by whoever has some info that turns out to be a winner just because of the number of people who follow when someone says that magic word.

True, but it could be an inspired rationale tip from Oddy or Stick... more likely Oddy but you know what I mean!

Wouldn't the best way to determine how good we are be for a simple profit/loss thread on people's selections?
    Whoever makes the most wins?

This would be tough to pick up from the daily thread so would probably need a seperate thread where you would only post bets that you actually want considered as you believed they have a good chance of winning.
And would eliminate the chancer bets where you're just having a flutter on the next race.

The only problem I could see would be towards the end of the comp people at the bottom would be throwing in big priced tips in the hope of catching the leaders.

I guess this would be similar to the naps thread, although not limited to one bet a day, but maybe with the incentive of a prize might attract more entries.

Maybe not as exciting as it wouldn't produce as many big priced winners but would reward consistency.

As I said Percy, that didn't work last time we tried it. The intention was for recognition of good contributions to the DT. I could, in addition, if required, use info from the VBS bets to produce tables (eg running profit/loss, biggest priced winners, % winners etc as long as it didn't discourage people to place bets (currently statements are only produced on request and by PM, mimicking a personal and private betting account, although all bets are in public)

Sure, I just though with the incentive of a prize people might take it more seriously.....

Otherwise what would determine a good contribution?
If someone posts a 20/1 winner then surely the only way to better this is with a bigger priced winner?
So once someone has posted a big priced winner then there would be no point anyone tipping anything lower than that?
It would then end up with 50/1 shots, 100/1 shots being tipped until someone got lucky.

Good idea but tough to see it working I think.

I guess the only other way would be as already suggested where people vote for best tip.
There you could argue that a 10/1 shot that bolts up is better than a 20/1 shot that wins because another horse fell at the last.

There could be nominations which would make Bob's job easier (provided the post was linked or referenced by the nominator). Someone could nominate themselves to ensure mates didn't dominate - not that I think that would happen. I trust Bob's judgement and he is giving out the prize(s).

Thanks for the time you are about to spend on this Bob.
It will probably stimulate the daily thread which is no bad thing.
Just about to have a look at your website....do like a nice bottle of wine, so could be a good form of advertising too!!

Good day, Cyc! Exactly, the selection process must be trimmed down somehow. That's what should be worked on.

Cor blimey, are you types still on about this!

Must say that ‘vote for the best tip’ idea sounds very ‘New’ Labourish / Guardian readership type thing! Open to all sorts of abuse and I’m sure the chap with all the IDs will get plenty of nominations in one way or another. Nudge, nudge, wink, wink, say no more…

The alternative must be that we just preserve the bally old status quo. Seriously do fear for the ‘Daily Thread’ otherwise as it will just, as I’ve said before, become chock full of tips for long priced horses that the correspondent concerned doesn’t even fancy but are putting up in a desperate attempt to 'win' the comp!
