Scotland has the right to call as many referendums as they like. Let's be honest, if the Brexit vote had been 52/48 to remain there would have been calls for another referendum (in fact Farago was calling for one on the night when he thought he'd lost). Bit hypocritical of anyone who called for a brexit vote to deny them this - there has been a fundamental shift in circumstances since they voted to stay in the Union. Think the Scots would be ****ing insane to take it at the moment, but if the EU has their head screwed on they'll exploit it to the hilt and possibly offer Scotland an independent trade deal/status for their fishing rights. be ****ing comical if those Grimsby trawlerrmen who voted en masse for Brexit will be having to ask Scottish permission to fish in the Atlantic! Good luck to the Jocks. Hope Ulster follows them. And I can say that having a granny from Cork and a granddad from Dumfries.
The rights of the minority who want to leave don't ovrerrule the rights of the majority who either don't care or want to remain. It's a ridiculous waste of resources and if you hold the referendum so soon you'd get lower turnout. (Just the votes of the diehards , not the majority) This new call is mainly about Nicola throwing her dummy out the pram because she is angry she didn't get her way. She'll keep throwing that dummy out over and over again. I supported last year's referendum (although disagreed with choice to let 16 y/o children vote). If Ulster want to leave I'd say let them have a referendum to decide. If they vote to leave, they may leave.
The leave vote won by 1,259,201 Scottish leave vote totalled 1,018,322 I would say they had a fair contribution to us leaving and should live with it. 38% of the voting electorate should not be pushed aside just because it helps one person try to make a name for themselves.
Scotland as a country voted to remain. Stop talking nonsense. They didn't get to remain because there were a ****load of thick gullible people in England and Wales who voted Brexit because they are small minded racists.
Scotland didn't vote as a country, they voted as part of the UK (that thing they recently voted to stay part of), as such their exit vote near enough totalled the majority.
The referendum was two years ago. They have the democratic right to call as many referendums as they please, and the Scottish people have the democratic right to boot them out for doing so, if they so wish. I don't like salmond, but he summed it up perfectly on QT last night - it was in their manifesto to hold another referendum (or have the option to, anyway) if there was Brexit and the resultant deal didn't suit Scotland). Some people (I don't mean you) are getting hysterical about the demcratic voice and how we can't even question the Brexit deal as if it's some sort of affront to the choice of the people, but if the Scots and the Irish may want to use their democratic right not to take the same path as England and Wales then they're some sort of anarchists. Well I say good luck to Ulster and Scotland in whatever they decide; Murdoch and Dacre don't rule everyone.
That's the whole point; many of them don't want to be a minority. It's exactly the same as England and Wales wanting to break away from the EU because they fely their view was in a minority and they wanted their sovereignty to make their own decisions. If the Scottish people don't want that they can kick the Nats out of the assembly at the ballot box. If we don't like that we can lump it.
That's not what I was talking about. I was talking about the whiny minority that want to leave whilst the majority are either nonplussed or want to remain. Why should the whiny minority have an annual referendum on leaving at the expense of all those who aren't as bothered? They failed last year. They would most likely fail next year once people actually evaluated the prospect of being alone without Europe or England. Yet they're going to keep whining. Should Merseyside hold a referendum on independence every year because a few people would want that? It's a waste of resources and time. A referendum once or twice a generation, ok. Having one every other year is just silly.
Because things have changed dramatically since the EU referendum? 62% of the Scottish population wanted to remain in the EU, the only reason way they'd be able to be part of the EU now is if they vote to leave the UK and try to join as an independent nation. This new vote would essentially be about whether the Scottish people would rather be part of the EU or part of the UK, I believe they will choose the former.
That's not an option though, not immediately anyway. Last time there was a referendum the European nations all said Scotland didn't get automatic admission. They have to apply as new member which can take years and means they have to drop the pound and use the Euro. Scotland would be on their own.
The leading Brexit negotiater on behalf of the EU has already said "I think this possibility has to exist, yeah. Because if Scotland decides to leave the UK, to be an independent state, and they decide to be part of the European Union I think there is no big obstacle to do that.". I think it proves that its only more scaremongering by Rupert Murdoch and his media cronies to say that Scotland would struggle to join the EU and take years to join. Also to @terrifictraore
Verhofstadt also said in that same interview: "We like to have all the citizens in who like Europe it would be completely suicidal if the European Union say no to those who want to come into the European Union. The European Union is so big, such a good and fantastic project that is suicide not to be sympathetic to those who want to join the European Union". There are a whole lot of places who want to join the EU but are nowhere near joining yet. Not saying it wont happen, just that its nowhere near as easy as some suggest. Verhofstadt appears to only be interested in scaring other countries from considering even considering exit.
Westminster won't authorise a 2nd ref this early and with no proof there has been a significant swing in opinion from the first result. It's merely gobshiting from the mad midget.
They wouldn't want to come back, and rightly so. **** this English right wing Tory unelected government that is making decisions over Scotland, Northern Ireland & Wales.
Well, Prime Minister. Still the conservatives haven't been elected by the people of Wales or Scotland. Wales voted labour and Scotland voted SNP.
Scotland makes most of its own decisions then expects England to pick up the bill. The idea of N Ireland leaving the UK is laughable . The government was elected by universal suffrage so am unsure how you think they are unelected.
