I've nothing but admiration for Slippy after the headed goal in the league cup final.

Apart from the nostalgia putting people like Edwards, Charlton and other greats of the past is ludicrous as they wouldn't live today's players with regards to athleticism, control and skill.

That was Highburial's climax on the forum. Without doubt his finest post. Sadly, everything from here is downhill.

I'd say there's only 2 or 3 definites for me and the rest are highly interchangeable. Ronaldo and Suarez have to be in there and personally I'd have Giggs in too.

Surprised no-one has even mentioned Scholes yet, unless I missed it...

If players had the same facilities, how do you know they wouldn't?

You could easily say the players of today wouldn't have coped back then

Yeh I don't buy that either. Players like Best had the **** kicked out of him with no protection from the ref, but still rode those dirty tackles and played through injuries the current crop would end up on the doctor's bench for 12 months with.

Chopper Harris wouldn't get anywhere near professional football in the modern game. Likewise, Messi and Ronaldo wouldn't last a day playing against him either!

    ----------------------Schmeichel
    Neville------Hansen---------Vidic-------Irwin
    Best-----Scholes----Souness-----Ronaldo
    --------------Cantona----Suarez

May not seem it but I'm genuinely trying to be impartial with that line up.

Souness btw - not just a solid, bone-crunching tackler in midfield as everyone nowadays paints him to be - the bloke had vision and great creativity and scored some roosters. He was an all round midfielder.

Anyone without Gerrard in their team is bonkers.

TBF on @Treble I tried a few teams but it just seems wrong. Cantona was a hell off a player but was he as good for as long as Dalglish? No way. Can you drop Giggs for Best?
Why isn't Hyypia in the list?
Phil Neal is probably the best full back ever.
Scholes has to be in there somewhere.
Rush? Maybe not in the modern game but in his time World class.
I could go on forever but but only fans of the teams will truly know and bias will get in the way no matter what.

Cantona is my football hero but he wouldn't make my team.

@Stanley any player that can perform as he did on the big occasion deserves respect, he had it all and any Man Utd fan will always say otherwise.
Goals in all the big finals and played well week after week In the company of ****e at times.

Some fair points but I wouldnt put Giggs in there for the same reason I wouldnt put Gerrard. Regardless of how good they were, there are better players in their position.

He also bottled it in too many big games and was, at times, incapable of sticking to a position/system.

Very good player but absolutely no chance he'd make my combined XI.

You could easily make 5 teams, such as the quality available.

Maybe better players, but in terms of consistency they both turned up week after week and in big games whereas others had moments of sheer brilliance both Gerrard and Giggs were very much about performing to a high level in every game but again both capable of those big moments.

I could say that about the midfield I've put up though.

Stop criticising and put up your XI :emoticon-0172-mooni
