I can categorically state that England would have won Euro 96 and possibly France 98 as well if Matthew Le Tissier had been selected.

What a goal. I don't know how I'd pick out my favourite. I think of it as an honour to have seen him play in his pomp - Happy birthday, Matt - you'll always be a legend.

I still love the dribbled goal from the hat-trick at home to Norwich (4-1), cos of the way he teases the defenders and then leaves them all on their arses. But that free-kick against Wimbledon. The sheer audacity!!

Love you Matt, you fat, big-nosed beauty!!!!!!

I always liked the other goal of his in that game against Newcastle. Headed to him (by Dowie?), he controls it on his thigh and volleys it into the top corner from 25 yards out. Plenty of players don't score goals like those in their whole career and he knocked in two in about 20 minutes.

    Yep that was wonderful.

Special mention to the first of the Valentine's Day hat-trick against Liverpool. It was freezing cold that day, but that shot was an absolute bullet and warmed everyone up nicely right at the start.

Was that the rocketed half volley that never seemed to get more than a foot or so off the ground?

Still remember in 2001 I went to a Players dinner (My dad's company sponsored Paul Jones, then Claus for years), and I went along expecting to be on Paul Jones' table. I was shocked when I saw the seating plan that I was on Paul's table, but sat NEXT to my all time hero, MLT. I have never ever been starstruck before. Bear in mind in 2001 I was 32 years old and not a child! It took me 20 mins to just get any words out. He was so laid back and down to earth it was amazing - in the end he chatted like we were best mates.

My favourite part of the evening was when i was walking out of the loo, he was at the bar and shouted "hey mate, what you drinking?" "I replied a vodka and diet coke" to which he said to the barman "get may mate a double and I'll have one too but with real coke in!"

We chatted all evening and his favourite goal was the one at Blackburn (the meal was just before THAT final goal), mine I told him was the first against Newcastle, followed by Wimbledon free kick. He said he had practised the free kick all week and when it went in he was so used to seeing it go in he didn't even get that excited.

Really great guy - I was in Southampton about 2 years later and he walked past, stopped ME and said "Hello Mark, how are you?" Great, great down to earth guy.

    Edit:

All I can say to end the day is Happy Birthday Matt.

And when he gets the ball, he takes the p***, Matt, Matt Le Tiss. :)

    Lol edit 2:
Many moons ago, I did this as he was my no1 footballing hero. So outdated, but still there!

Met the great man himself earlier! Spending his birthday running 19 miles with his old pal. Respect.

Not old enough to have really seen him play but I've grown up on DVDs and YouTube clips of him and I was a bit awe-struck meeting him.

Both he, and Franny, were just absolutely brilliant and had time for everyone today. Not sure I would after doing what Franny has been!

(yes, I know I look happy... oh and this photo is not ever being deleted :) - two bonafide legends)

I know that expression. It's the Totally Overwhelmed look.

I had the same look when I queued in confident mood, waiting for Matty to sign his new DVD. When the great man looked up and said Hi, I suddenly turned into mumbling, bumbling statue. I could barely utter any of the words I had thought to say. He was very good about it, of course.

I wasn't 4th in line on the day he did his book
Signing. He came out to start talking to the crowd before it started and he was gobsmacked to hear we'd driven down at 6am from Northampton just to get his signature on the book. He was bewildered that someone would do that because of him.

The photo of him, me and the kids was used as the back drop on South Today that night and is my favourite photo*

*wish I'd brushed my hair though*

Matt has said in interviews how grateful he was to play in a time where every match was filmed, so he/we can enjoy every goal over and over again.
Sadly he was before the digital age, where every minute of every match is stored and every player has a YouTube highlight video.

This is still the only video I can find of just skills and a few good near misses
