    genocide
    ˈdʒɛnəsʌɪd/
    noun
    1. the deliberate killing of a large group of people, especially those of a particular nation or ethnic group.
      "a campaign of genocide"
synonyms: racial killing, massacre, wholesale slaughter, mass slaughter, wholesale killing, indiscriminate killing; More
Norman king leads military campaign with scorched earth tactics, killing thousands of Anglo-Saxon and Danish inhabitants of northern England. Sounds like genocide to me. Sounds like genocide to medieval historian William Kapelle as well, who's an expert in the Norman history of England. Archaeological evidence proves the violence was catastrophic and unprecedented and contemporary Norman chroniclers said William was burning in hell for his crimes in the North.

His dad came ahead. How did he get into the country? He is in Birmingham but he has lost touch. Strange.
Wonder how he got hold of £5.400 whilst escaping from the clutches of the Taliban. We think our public transport is expensive. He walked most of the way but spent £5,400 on buses and trains?

Genocide is the intentional action to destroy a people (usually defined as an ethnic, national, racial, or religious group) in whole or in part. The hybrid word is a combination of génos ("race, people") and -cide ("to kill").The United Nations Genocide Convention defines it as "acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group".

Which group was he trying to destroy? Anglo-Saxons, Danes? Maybe the ethnic, racial or religious group known as Northerners? Genocide is a word bandied about too readily.whenever large groups of people are killed.
William wasn't setting outto exterminate any group, but a lot of deaths were the result of his ruthlessness. No point wiping out the population when you conquered them to exploit them. Presumably you think Stalin was involved in the genocide of Ukrainians or Cossacks? Or King Leopold of Belgium in the Congo?

It wasn't unprecedented either. Spook needs to read up about the Romans.

Yes, the Holodomor was definitely a genocide, as was the Congo Free State. William didn't intend to kill all the Northumbrian Angles and Danes but he intended to kill thousands of them as part of his military tactics. It was retribution for their resistance to Norman rule and rebellion, that's why he 'lay waste to the North'.

"I ranted a load of ****e about Lilly Allen" - In total she was mentioned in one sentence that was 29 words long. The rest of my whole post (a further 6 sentences) was nothing to do with Lilly Allen and to do with the plight of those in Calais. The majority of my post was nothing to do with the women and more to do with my views on the situation as a whole. So your comments are completely inaccurate.

To call it inaccurate is therefore wrong as neither of us can verify what I mentioned, and to call it "twattish" is your opinion. I believe a number of things on this forum are differing to my opinion, I decided not to jump to conclusions about those individuals. For example whilst quoting one of your posts I don't link to an article about how those with greater wealth than the average person should donate more to charity or should pay higher taxes so we are able to help those in Calais . That is because I have no idea how much you give to charity, the same as which you have no idea on my views on Immigration, Xenophobia or what newspapers I read, so I would prefer if you refrain from linking me to such articles as the criticism in that article about people having a go at Lilly is not representative of my views, never has been and never will be.

This thread highlights why politics and religion shouldn't be discussed. People can't express opinions without people jumping down their throats.

Re-arrange these words to form a well known phrase.....'.back running water like ducks down a'

You can re-arrange "back running water like ducks down a" and get "like water off a duck's back"? That's clever.

BTW the original one referred to ducks, plural, whilst the other one refer's to duck's,singular.

I assume you're referring to examples like Carthage. Very similar tactics, though not on the scale of William's Harrying. The city was razed but the salting of the earth is a myth, at least in the sense they didn't render agriculture useless (they might have done it as a religious rite). After the last Carthaginian War the region was a important economic province of Rome. Northern England was a wasteland with livestock and population massively depleted for decades after.

Mind you, Boudicca got involved in a bit of genocide towards the Romans, or at least the ones who were here, under the loose definition of genocide being killing a lot of people. Alexander the Great, Attila, Genghis Khan, Julius Caesar, Alaric and countless others were under the loose definition of it bandied about nowadays.

And? I don't support Jeremy Corbyn. I'm an anarchist, I take inspiration in some part from the likes of Proudhon, Kropotkin, Stirner, Nietzsche, Wilde and Kierkegaard. Anarchists were the first amongst the victims of Marxist-Leninism so I have no love for them whatsoever.

Who said you do? You are not the centre of the universe with everything revolving around you. I passed a comment on what a couple of politicians think.

Carthage isn't in the British Isles. So that's a bizarre assumption.
