How many people are 'long term unemployed'? Something like 1.5% I think.

If you're at the bottom of the ladder in terms of work and have a family, it isn't just as simple as taking on some **** zero hour contract that doesn't offer a regular solid wage. Immigrants are exploited and their exploitation not only drives worker conditions down but also allows people like you to judge the people of this country who have been given a raw deal for decades.

You'll be saying people should get on their bikes and look for work next.

Youve made some decent points but to say if they wont get a job its no problem is where it falls down.
We've got enough lazy bastards of our own here that refuse to work.

That's still roughly 900,000 people though, are you saying they mostly have a legitimate reason to be out of work?

There's a difference between not finding work and not actively looking for it. If you're out of a job and you find one that matches your skillset and you need the money, why would you turn it down? Even if it's zero hours, if you need the money that badly, you take it. Even if it doesn't work out you can at least say you tried.

You seem to be defining a classic deserving and undeserving poor here - oh why don't they just go and clean up someone's house for a living?

Let the people have proper work then they'll do it. Work that they can rely upon, that will pay for them and their children to actually enjoy life rather than scrape a living week to week.

Work has come easy for you. You said you've signed on twice and found work quickly. You suggest at least one of your parents earns a decent wage - not saying you would, but there's a fall back - there's someone to help when the going gets tough.

You've been to university and have a profession.

Don't you realise that a lot of people haven't had these advantages?

Of course, but I also know of people that haven't had such a lucky break and have still managed to find a way to earn a living. A single example perhaps, but an example of how it can be achieved.

It's those less likely examples that dragged out to berate those on benefits - see most newspapers for further details.

In the real world they're not common place.

It's like the society we live in. Sure, I could work hard/get lucky and become a millionaire.

    But how likely is it?

Our entire system is set up to parade these unlikely examples as somehow aspirational, when in the real world it's extremes of a different kind that is the norm: intergenerational poverty and a closed society.

Fair enough, I withdraw my complaint. But I don't see how the country of one's birth is a problem when it comes to who should live here.

We have more slaves in this country now than ever before including the 18th and 19th century. It's happening all over the country whether it's Morecambe Bay cockle pickers, gangmasters or domestic servants in London. We even have groups of men working in several car washes in Hull.
People getting exploited to within a mm of legality, or in many cases well beyond it.

If only the Brits were as hardworking, eh?

Ah the David Blunkett option 'I refuse to set an upper limit to numbers of people coming to live in this country'

Back then UKIP was only three men and a bike, then thanks to Labour's refusal to engage with its core voters in favour of metropolitan dinner table gesture politics, it has captured millions of formerly safe Labour votes.
    The Mike Hookem paradigm.
