Living in France I get to fly a lot these days. Commuting between the continent and England has never been easier, faster in fact than commuting between Bristol and London.
The highlight for me is always the pregnant moment waiting on the runway, listening to the engines whining and feeling a gentle vibration through the plane's hull that signifies the build up of latent energy and the great bird's anticipation of taking flight.
Then motion, faster and faster, beyond car speed, beyond rail speed, can we get to 88mph ? Go on son, up and away - and……relax !

That second on the runway, attaining the necessary light-speed to enable us all to live reminds me very much of how it feels right now to be a supporter of Bristol City Football Club.
We are at 5, the season still stretches before us. The memory of a triumph in the lower division reminds us how it is possible to make the leap into the unknown, and suddenly we have the tools for the job.

All the more poignant given the recent passing of one of our finest, that something important could be happening this season

The runway is before us, there is no headwind, so to the Robins squad of 2016 I say take a deep breath, feel the air, charge the psych, stretch every sinew like your very lives depend upon it.

AND GO LIKE THE CLAPPERS !

    High Flying Bird
    Elton John
You wore a little cross of gold around your neck
I saw it as you flew between my reason
Like a raven in the night time when you left
Mm-hmm, I wear a chain upon my wrist that bears no name
You touched it and you wore it
And you kept it in your pillow all the same

My high-flying bird has flown from out my arms
    I thought myself her keeper
She thought I meant her harm
She thought I was the archer
    A weather-man of words
But I could never shoot down
    (My) my high-flying bird

The white walls of your dressing room are stained in scarlet red
You bled upon the cold stone like a young man
Hmm, In the foreign field of death
"Oh, wouldn't it be wonderful?" is all I heard you say
You never closed your eyes at night and learned to love daylight
    Instead you moved away

I can't stand flying. I sweat the whole time. I try and take my mind off the fact that I am in a tin missile hurtling through the crowded sky at 30,000 ft, guided by some air traffic controllers who are only human after all.
I make sure I have a few drinks before and during the flight. It calms me down.

All this is a bit ironic as I have flown quite a bit over the years and am probably off to China next year :(
