At a quiz last night and a question came up which is still bugging me. Can anyone on here remember which football club were called the "Bank of England Club".

I know it's going to bug me all day until I get an answer.

    Cheers.

If you define spending 130 million in twelve months on transfers and still being relegated as success I would have to admit Sunderland do not stack up

Certainly and I thank you for the opportunity to indulge myself

Six times the best of the best in English football
Five times runners up in the same category

Newcastle can never in your lifetime even begin to match such success

I can give you a hint where to look, at the time the only money available was that taken at the turnstiles, so look for a team that had such incredible supporters that no one could match them

Try this for size over SEVENTY FIVE THOUSAND SUPPORTERS AT ONE GAME

Is it any wonder Newcastle supporters cry themselves to sleep at night

And how many came back for the next game after you lost? Not many if your average for the season was only 17,254. <laugh>

Oh and by the way from Wiki. My bold.

    "Attendances[edit]

    Average home attendances since 1891
This section applies to attendances played at home, in all of their grounds since their foundation. Attendance figures from the club's early days are approximate.

    • Highest attendance: 75,118 (v. Derby County, FA Cup, 8 March 1933) (Sunderland 0 – 1 Derby County)
    • Lowest attendance: 880 vs Millwall, Friendly, 28 July 1969 (Sunderland 0 – 1 Millwall)"

Simples it is called success , when you are locked in a tussle with your neighbour you must make sure you are better than them , Re Sunderland last season

Absolutely no idea at all of the real world, have you ? tell me how often have you not been able to attend a game because you had no money at all in your pocket ? can you even in your wildest dreams begin to envisage anyone in that situation ? No I thought not

I see, not being in the second division is classed as "success" as far as Sunderland are concerned.

    I've got your answer @LiamO

I think we are talking about the modern game, surely? Not fecking Victorian or Georgian times. 1953 and beyond. If we use that timescale, then your team are shyte!

So if that was the case, you would expect that you had the highest attendances at hat time. except, no wait. you didn't.You didn't have the highest average attendance in any of the years that you were winning your titles. You had richer owners than other football clubs!

Sunderland last won the title in 1935-36 and the FA Cup in 1973. What is this ****ing success? Who gives a **** what they won 40/ 80+ years ago? No-one. Just like no-one gives a damn what Newcastle won at the turn of the 20th century or the mid 50's. The important stats from recent history.

Have Sunderland played in the Champions League? No. Have Newcastle? Yes
Have Sunderland played in the UEFA Cup/ Europa League? No. Have Newcastle? Yes
Have Sunderland finished in the top 3 of the Premier League? No. Have Newcastle? Yes

Which club has played in the top flight the longest out of Newcastle and Sunderland? Newcastle.
Which club would most neutrals rather watch? Newcastle.
Which club out of Newcastle and Sunderland do TV companies chase after to show? Newcastle.
Which club gets the most media coverage? Newcastle.
Which club has to advertise tickets to buy on billboards coming into and out of South Shields because they can't sell them otherwise? Sunderland.
Which club regularly sells out home and away allocations? Newcastle.
Which club has one of the highest average gates in the country? Newcastle
Which club has the highest average attendance? Newcastle or Sunderland? Newcastle.
Which club would players rather sign for? Newcastle
Which club attracted and kept a world class, Champions League winning manager despite being relegated? Newcastle.
Which club is in the European top 20 for highest attendances and wealth? Newcastle.

See where I am going with this? I know it's difficult to take, but Newcastle relatively speaking are the more successful club on and off the field.

This is the classic case of two bald men fighting over a comb. If it wasn't for fredor, we wouldn't take any pleasure in pointing out his inconsistencies. Both teams have a shocking recent history when you consider how well and how passionately they are supported.

The 58 vintage was particularly good. You can see why Trigger Short is unwilling to lavish vast sums on these paupers. They have blackened history. Just deserts after typically trying to cheat.

Saying that I enjoyed the 87 vintage most.
