Best football stadiums visited in the UK and abroad? For me my favourite is the Allianz Arena and in the U.K. I would say the Wembley (good memories of the play off final probably has a major influence). The most disappointing ground I have visited would be the Bernabeu very disappointing and dreary on the outside and pretty old looking inside. With Real I expected the stadium to be immaculate and it just wasn't.
Is it wrong of me to like some of the rust riddled division 3 and 4 stadiums on away days? PL stadiums are a bit sanitised for me. I couldn't honestly name my favourite Underhill at Barnet, Moss Rose at Macclesfield. I particularly liked the decaying Bloomfield Road in the mid 90s. The McCain Stadium in Scarborough, Gay Meadow at Shrewsbury, London Road Peterborough. Loved those road trips when we were relatively awful.
Favourite away days last season were Accrington & Bury. I miss them type of grounds, it's a different & better buzz going to them.
Signal Iduna Park. It's incredible. I've always wanted to go to one of the US college football stadiums that usually hold around 100,000. I do agree with GLP though - those lower league stadiums are always great to go to, the ****ter the better. Get a different type of atmosphere than you do at one of the big stadiums.
My mate did a year at university in Seattle. He said the college game attendances are simply mind blowing.
Back in the 70s always enjoyed trips to the old traditional grounds in Lancashire, Bolton, Blackburn, Preston, Burnley. Mostly surrounded by old terraced houses and reminiscent of a bygone era. Always wondered how they ever got some of the crowds in that they did (same went for Huddersfield and Roker Park). One favourite was Fulham when it still had the large open end. Anyone who went to the Baseball ground in those days will confirm what an atmosphere there was and created by a relatively small crowd. It isn't just that PL grounds are sanitised, with the right sort of support anywhere can become a vibrant, intimidating place, just look at some modern all seaters that are found in Europe. The problem is that because of pricing, amongst other things, the demographics of the crowds have changed.
It is ridiculous when you think about it. I often wonder if it's driven by spotting the next big star - wish I'd done a year abroad somewhere. He used to hire a car most weekends and drive up to Vancouver - still says to this date it's the best city he's ever been to.
Old and atmospheric, for that Hearts stadium Tyncastle is absolutely unbelivable. It is so tight to the pitch. The noise was insane and must have been intimidating for opposition players with the fans right on top of them.
Stadion Oberwerth, Koblenz. Played there in early 1970's . LB. of Haringey were twinned with Koblenz and we played several matches against Council sides. The last match in the stadium we subsequently found out was against the semi/pro town team. So 0-0 was a result. It's lovely little stadium with close views of the Rhine.
I liked Wembley & Orlando City's stadium. I love gettyinto the KC & of course Boothferry Park was amazing back in the day, even though it was falling to bits in places!
Baseball Ground, mainly for how the noise of the fans was amplified round the ground. I also will never forget the atmospheric scene of mills and hills around Halifax's The Shay.
Agree with some of the earlier posts, for me it's more about history and atmosphere than facilities. Yes they may have been desperately lacking in terms of facilities but a full Old Wembley and Giuseppe Meazza were / are steeped in it, you just felt / feel it as you walked in. I always liked Leeds Road too. However if we are talking facilities the new Wembley is pretty amazing, particularly the Legends level (I think it's called). A free bar served by aesthetically pleasing waitresses makes any game enjoyable.
I always liked Millmoor, the low roof created a great atmosphere. Happy memories of Spotland, Gigg Lane, and Exeter. Loudest home support I agree with Castro was Baseball Ground. Best modern ground is Emirates but poor atmosphere and expensive pies.
