The football media were 100% behind Southgate and look what happened. After 2 games we still play like Roy Hodgsons side, or even Capellos side. We need a radical rethink because everything is wrong about the way the National team is run and that means FA. Southgate was rewarded for winning the U21 trophy and the step up has killed him and his views and tactics. Out of his depth and 2 garbage teams have proved that our lowly world ranking is a fair reflection of where we are. Best managers we've had in the modern game were Venebles and Hoddle. Both free thinking tacticians and man managers, who knew flair players were needed but knew how to use them for the betterment of the team. Best captains we ever had were Robson and Butcher out of those 2 only Butcher has ever won anything as a manager. So inspirational management and captaincy is key. so for me we should get Terry Butcher (Studied under Bobby Robson) and get him a top coach and dont meet fat Sammy Lee. Also use beckham who for many was also inspirational. we need inspiring as the players are good enough but used out of position or in wrong set ups. It seems the new ploy is to keep the ball which is great but if you cant get it forward to a striker and give him a chance what is the use. Sturridge or Vardy isnt a lone striker, we dont get the ball in anyway and seem to want to do an Arsenal and over play it with tippy tappy and no end result. If we cant score against Iceland, Malta and that shyte last night we will get smashed by the top nations. Butcher for manager over to you
I don't have any interest in international football and it doesn't bother me win or lose, but Terry Butcher?? He has only won stuff in Scotland which makes it pretty irrelevant. I would be going for Klinsmann
Many of us thaink like you, but probably because for years and years we've been shyte. Euro 96 was massive as battered the Dutch, beat Spain and got beaten by Germany on penaltys. Everyone was proud of the football we were playing. After that we got Hoddle and he carried it on until the FA sacked him like Veners for non football reasons. All backwards since then and why we support team over country. Can be changed with the right manager. Klinsmann taken and getting paid huge for exporting the German model to the US. We dont have a model so need to build one. We have players but the way England coach is wrong and if you have good players they just need to be told what to do and when. So Butcher for me doesnt need to have won the Champions League, he needs to instill passion and inspire the players. Wilkinson was nobodies choice of Leeds United manager but look what he did with vision. He set up the academy and won the league. Our academy was the envy of the world and many of those players are still in the premiership now. he got the job as head of coaching at the FA and look what happened and then they got rid and look what happened since. So Butcher may not be on anyones radr but I cant think of anyone better. Wenger maybe but not sure
Only one man for me, Arsene Wenger... We should have got him earlier when Arsenal might have been happy to let him go. Knows English football inside out, even if we have to wait until the season ends, allow him a say in who is picked and get a temporary coach in place of Wengers choosing.
With the enormous influx of foreign players in the EPL and FA as a whole, local lads aren't getting a chance to learn their trade or to advance their ability. At least in Oz, very few foreign players want to come here so the locals get at showing what they can do. True, a lot of them then move on to Europe to better themselves but at least they had the chance in their early days and the Australian national team get the benefit.
Genuine non fishing non banter opinion... A bit like Leeds Not as good as I would like but better than performances suggest. Constantly appointing the wrong people and playing the wrong tactics. If there was a world league with every top 50 nation playing home and away we would be scratching around 6th Looking at the teams in front of us in the world rankings we are better than Portugal and Wales who are one man teams, take Ronaldo and Bale out and they are nothing.
one off games mean very little,they lost 2-0 to the Swiss last month and were only 3rd best in their euro group.Ireland beat Italy yet we all know Ireland are crap and won't be going to Russia.

I believe we are over the course of 50 games or even 36. We have a whole squad of at least 18 good players. What we lack is the one or two world class ones that can make a big difference. I am not a fan of Beckham but the team responded to him when he was on the pitch and he did give 100% Ronaldo is head and shoulders above anything we have but without him Portugal are pretty poor and certainly nothing special. I remember Greece winning and you looked at them at the time thinking wtf Leicester won a major title last season, it all came together for them but no way are they better than either Manchester team, Arsenal, Spurs, Chelsea or even Liverpool. Every now and again you get that strange one when everything falls into place just right. One off games we bottle it, over the course of a season if World a Cups and Euros were decided that way we would be a lot nearer.
Can I ask why Scotland, Wales and Ireland seem to be united in hating England when it comes to sport? I always want the other home nations to do well, I genuinely find it strange how the hatred towards England is so strong yet you support an English FC team If Leeds had 5 players in the England squad, (apart from thinking you were dreaming) would you feel differently?
Time will tell. Unlike you I can't see into the future and base my opinions on the here and now. Engerland could well win a World Cup again with wingers great grandson as coach and an entire team made up from Rooneys great grandchildren. Also likely to be a lot of flying pigs hovering around too
