Starting a thread which has me thinking that I'm sure has been done before but not in this way.

Starting with goalkeepers name in your experience the best you can remember, then the worst and then finally your favourite goalkeeper. Add why if you want.

Right back thread will follow in due course unless someone remembers that they did this just last week.

To get things started for me the best keeper in my time was Shay Given. He seemed small but was a great shot stopper and grew to command the defence.

Worst keeper has more competition. Who can forget such super stars as Lionel Perez, John Karelse and Super Dooper Hooper all of whom have a strong claim for the title but for me the winner/loser has to be Steve Hardwick nicknamed "Stevie Hardlines". His errors at the time were many and unforgettable but my favourite was when he dived full length to deflect a ball going wide into the net. You had to see it to believe it.

Favourite has to be Pavel "is a Geordie" Srnicek. The man started in dodgy fashion with crosses initially being a problem but worked hard and became a legend and famous for his dribbling past forwards who tried to close him down.

Open to anyone, including "foreigners", who want to comment.

Given is the best we've had in my time watching Newcastle.

Mike Hooper was pretty ****, but I'd give the prize to Jak Alnwick.

Footballs lost its magic now it's too professional

    Loved him

Imagine seeing your goal keeper doing that

Imagine seeing him bend a 25 yard free kick in the net in an international for Christ sake

    Best ever

Given was massively overrated. Krul was best for a few years before he turned to ****. Worst, no idea. Favourite, probably big Shaka

Budgie was quality. Pavels daftness belied the quality he had. Very much a modern keeper. Hislop should have been fantastic - mentally though he was very weak. Given at his peak for us was excellent.

Beasant had a torrid time with us. Hooper was awful. Perez was a clown but never really played enough.

I liked Kevin Carr but mainly because he lived round the corner and gave me a set of gloves. I will always have a soft spot for tommy wright, I just liked the bloke and his abrasive nature.

    I'll go:

    Best: Given
    Worst: Hooper
    Favourite: Burridge

Best for me was krul before we all went to sh*t. Worst I have seen by someway is Alnwick. Favourite just for last season and making himself when totally written off, is Elliott. Honorable mentions for given and harps as both are 2 top blokes that were great keepers and servants to the club.

    I'll say it again....John Burridge.
Ancient when he joined us but the fittest player on the park every week. He was also a quality keeper.
Worst - John Karelse. Played one game away to Southampton and was never heard of again. He made Mike Hooper look world class.

Actually the more I think about it Alnwick probably was the worst. I probably cut him slack as he was chucked in with odds stacked against. Whereas Hooper actually had decent pedigree. Worst value was Beasant - that was a record for a goalie at the time. Harper runs Burridge a very close second for favourite, his loyalty given his quality was unrivalled.

Harper would have walked into most first teams. In his prime he was a top keeper.
