    I think they were better when they were manufactured in Havant. My Mum had one for years - think my sister still uses it! This one is brand new and doesn't feel as solid - my guess is that the gears have stripped, probably nylon not the old metal ones. Oh well - they said they'd replace it, so that's fine by me.

    Could be, Jasper. They've said they'll replace it, no quibble, so I'm happy with that. Of course, the proof will be when I make the next batch of dough <whistle>

    Friday manufacture, I reckon :emoticon-0105-wink:

    Bought off Amazon, so even if Kenwood wouldn't have changed it, I'd have gone back to them for a replacement and they're usually pretty good about that.

    That would be a very good guess if the motor still runs. Yes, I understood they went over to plastic gears several years ago because they are quite drive noisy with the metal ones. But they do last. Bloody heavy though.

    Hmm - that's a good point. The motor DOESN'T run - there's not a squeak from it. Maybe there's a cut-off switch to prevent it stripping and this has blown. Guess I might never know - I just want my new one.

    Talking about the famed dough hook - I don't like the new one. It seems to miss a portion of the bowl, which, I reckon, caused the issue, as the dough wasn't kneaded properly and there was a hardish lump in it. I'll speak to them about that tomorrow. Becoming quite the baker, I am! :smiley-finger007:

    Glad you don't work for Kenwood customer service! :emoticon-0100-smile

    Ultimately it's going to come back to the manufacturer anyway, so they're right to do it this way. In my opinion

    The famed British after sales service.!

    Now let me give you an incidence of a product bought at Lidl. It was a Targa DVD-HDD Recorder. Got it in 2006 for £150. It outperformed all the Sonys, Samsungs, etc.., at the time and had a much larger HDD capacity. Plus it was about £50 cheaper. It came with the usual Euro 3yr guarantee. I used it a lot, let me tell you. I have loads of written DVDs as proof. But after nearly 3 years the DVD drawer decided to stick one day. Because the guarantee was days from running out I quickly phoned Targa After-Sales. An obviously German woman answered speaking superb English, and after I told her of the problem she apologised that the product had gone wrong. She told me to box it up securely. Original packaging was not required, and they would pay the postage. I let her email me a label directly, which I printed off and it had the postage paid on it. This I stuck to the box and sent off the whole lot to Targa. The box went to Germany, got repaired with a new DVD drive, got fully serviced to specification, the remote control was replaced for a new one as they discovered one of the buttons wasn't 100%, and it was sent back to me and ARRIVED BACK 4 DAYS AFTER I SENT IT, in perfect working order. It still does.

    All for a cheap product from Lidl. That's not bad service is it. That story went around family and friends. The main laughing reply was, just imagine if it was an English company. The grief you'd get. Well of course you'd get grief. The UK product would have been 2 years out of guarantee, for starters. ;)

    Well, thankfully English company Kenwood know what good service means. Good for them.

    You and people like you take the Piss. Happy if it's cheap, go squealing if it does not work out.

    I'm not even going to reply to that. Clearly you only buy expensive stuff and will throw it away when it doesn't work. Good for you

    Nylon isn't a good material for gears. Most likely acetal as it's more lubricious and better for gears.

    * sorry. Polymer nerd alert*

    Matt says he met his wife at a nightclub, but didn't get her details. Knowing she was a SFC season ticket holder, he located her seat with the help of the ticket office and left her a note. Not so sure the ticket office should have done that :)
