He went to Burnley and was pretty average IIRC.

Howe basically got begged to come home and is unsackable. Some team who have come to prem have tossed managers who got them there aside (like southampton)

Howe is probably not ready for the big time. If we look at the bournemouth squad... and see ok they will struggle to attract players.... well is there evidence this guy has the links and the nouse to find a really top player?

In england we see tehcnical directors rarely and often see vanity buys from CEOs rather than a quality technical director over a scouting department supporting the first team coach. Arsneal for example is where he is linked to. There is nothing other than wenger there... nothing. everything goes through him. So howe will really struggle to deliver any more than wenger has done and would likely just end up 6th and be called a disaster.

My view is he really should try win a cup at bournemouth and then move.

He is there 4 years now so probably should only say another 2 years max to build his rep. After that things get stale.

He had a stint at Burnley. Can't remember how that went. But on your point I shouldn't imagine the burnley players would run through a brick wall for him.

I think another issue here is players never get penalised. Attitude in some of them stinks and make little effort as they just think weLloyd you won't be here long and I will show the new manager what I can do.

Seen that a lot in the prem and with the money in the game now days clubs are more scared of losing certain players than managers.

Players need to start getting punished for inept performances not just managers who usually end up losing their jobs.

Yeah they get nice pay offs for being ****e,but players get 100 a week to be ****e all the time until they can be moved on.

No one is saying United or Liverpool should be hiring a manager in Championship. As saint says, everyone clubs and managers want instant success. United and Liverpool have both hired managers from mid table clubs in recent years.

Ex players should go do stint in youth level or get a job in lower leagues and build way up. I said yesterday a top job doesn't mean a Liverpool united city etc, it means Prem job. If an ex player takes over from league 1 then 2/3 years of decent performances move to a champ club or get promoted in that time, consolidate in champ, do well and a mid table Prem club may then come calling. This may be 6/7 years after they started though, which to many just seems like they don't want to work their way up that long.

As Lucas said, plenty of top foreign managers start on lower leagues and work their way up. Nothing stopping ex players from going abroad if feel aren't progressing up English route quick enough, heck might even do them good learning a different style.

Exactly, retire at 35 and they want to be managing a CL club by time they're 40. Doesn't work like that. Spend 10 years in background learning, developing and then take that experience and knowledge to a entry level job (league 1 or championship) and test yourself there. You can be a manager for 20 years, don't need to be working for Barca within 2 years to be a top manager once you retire.

He did leave for Burnley, didn't go great and moved back to Bournemouth.

Hence the 'noble principle' hasn't been 'consigned to history'.

Howe did his apprenticeship with Bournemouth and turned down several 'big' moves - one was jumping two divisions up to the Championship with Peterborough. He did leave Bournemouth for Burnley but it didn't work out nevertheless he's been linked with Everton and now England! He stuck to learning his trade where he felt he needed to be, good for him, and having done that he's attracted a lot of interest higher up, which is why I used him as an example of the 'noble principle' still being alive. [You could add Sean Dyche in here as well.]

The bolded bit - didn't work for Gary Monk.

Like many managers in the game, how much of Howe's success can be attributed to the back room at Bournemouth?

They've obviously got it right off the pitch and the club is doing unbelievably well given its relative size.

I'm not seeking to belittle Howe's achievements btw, merely suggesting that he's a cog in a very good machine

A great example is Klopp at Mainz, he even talked about it with Carra on MNF.

I guess Guardiola at Barca is another example, but that's entry at the highest level even starting with the B team.

The reason I brought Howe up wasn't about how successful he's been but more about him accurately gauging where he needs to do his 'apprenticeship' as opposed to a Giggs or Neville looking at a first job in management being at a 'top' club.

Wherever Giggs starts I don't see him as a good manager anyway. Just seeing him talk about football makes Michael Owen seem as charismatic as Mohamed Ali,

I'm with you there....You can have all the coaching badges under the sun but if you have the personality and get up and go of a traffic cone how you going to man manage and rile the players up? I can't see Giggs being a top manager at all...

Giggs strikes me as being thick tbh

Time will tell if he'll make a manager, I agree with the idea that managers should learn their trade at the lower levels

You don't come off the shop floor to take over as CEO of a global PLC without having earned your stripes
