Got a bit nof stick on Saturday after and before the game - including one person saying he was "ripped to shreds by Son at Spurs" (Son, the same player who also tormented Man City yesterday in a dominant performance!) I thought he looked exposed before Van Aanholt came on - had very little protection in front of him and normally left 2 on 1. Without Cattermole there to help with Khazri in front he's not likely to get much help. Once PVA came on he looked much more assured at left back IMO. PVA Left mid from now on for me.
He's class man - best CM in the world I tells ya! ****ing workhorse someone said on another thread - ****er.....
The system changed to 3 CB's and two wing backs, i.e. a position between full back and midfield. Only reason they were so high up the pitch is because West Brom were sitting back for the 1-0 victory. Think we may have stumbled on that formation which might suit us a bit better.
He played right back against QPR and he didn't have the best of games but he did make a headed goal line clearance. He looked comfortable on the ball bringing it out of defence but he didn't close down the opposition or stop many crosses, I also remember him trying an ambitious shot from the edge on the penalty box that almost went for a throw in. Anyway I think he is more of a central defender so I'm sure he will get better playing in his preferred position.
But some want PVA played further forward. So if its not Denyar. Who? But i agree he doesnt look comfortable there.
I thought Denayer had a mare at LB which is understandable given he's a CB. His positioning was all over the place, he clearly didn't know what he was doing. Doesn't seem to have any pace to speak of either. If we'd been playing anyone good we would have shipped goal after goal from that side. In other words, PVA at LB for me. If Moyes wants him to stay back more then just tell him to do so.
That could work, both PVA and Manquillo have a lot going for them in attack and arguably are more comfortable there. They both have good stamina so bombing up and down the wing shouldn't be a problem. I like the idea of O'Shea controlling the defence with Kone and Denayer on either side and if we're going to survive we'll need to do what Allardyce did and make clean sheets the priority.
Which you can kind of understand considering he's a right sided Centre Half. I had no idea he was only 21/22 as well!!
If the funds were available I'm sure we would have signed a second LB. Not Dave's fault the squad is full of holes. I blame the skint flint.
Play three at the back, we are hopeless in the wide positions, 3/2/3/2 would be best suited to this squad imo.
