    Hi Saints fans

For his entire time with us at Norwich he was always referred to as a promising talent and developing his game yet I personally never really saw much progress in that time. So, I would be interested in your thoughts on young Nathan Redmond so far. I know he scored on the opening day which made some headlines but I have heard virtually nothing of him since - is he featuring in the first XI?

Yes, plays every game. He's been asked to play a more central role (essentially as a striker) which I'm not yet convinced by. Too early to to say I think with him.

Seems very talented and often causes problems for opposition sides. However, his impact has been limited as he is being played out of position and so far is struggling to adapt.

Far too early for a verdict. But yeah, "promising talent" appears to cover it so far. He was a bit quiet yesterday at Leicester, but so far I'd say he's the sort of player who, when he's on the ball, provokes a bit of expectation from the crowd. Whether he'll go on to fulfil his obvious potential, we'll have to wait and see.

You seem to have started the season well. Good luck getting back to the PL.

It is interesting that you are using him in a more central role but why is this? I would have thought Redders out wide with Charlie as a lone striker would be a bit better.

I like him as he is a player who will run at the opposition rather than pass sideways (which isn't always bad). Causes problems and would have had more goals if finishing and service was better.

Thanks AR - early days and a lot of indifferent performances so far but have the points. If they can raise their game and tighten up at the back the PL return should be immediate :emoticon-0148-yes:

I think Puel has to be commended for his perseverance with playing Redmond up front. I don't think he's been awful or looked out of his depth and he has been dangerous in every game so far. A lot of the impact he is making is off the ball too. If Puel was to give up after this many games then it would look a bit flakey, it isn't really costing the team, he's really only taking Long's place who hasn't started the season in the same form he finished the last and we have a lot of games to play too. If his finishing improved then he could develop into a really tidy forward. His ability and desire to take on defenders is a great attribute to have. He's still young and can only get better but as a few have already said, it's very early to pass a final judgement.

Absolutely correct. Puel has seen something in him that specifically reminds him of Henry at the same age so who are we to argue, particularly when you consider how long it took Henry to really make it as a striker? And if Long is the current alternative, we're hardly missing out on goals.

Redmond is very much work in progress. Too early to say how far he will go as a striker but as hotbovril has written; we have so few options up front it not like he is keeping the next Matt LeT out of the first team. If we buy a striker in January it will be interesting to see what happens thereafter but he certainly has a future with us.

Redmond and Henry comparisons need to stop. He will never be anything like Henry. The sooner we buy an actual striker the better.

I agree the Henry comparisons aren't really helping.

I obviously wouldn't compare him to MLT either, but all three started out as wingers. And Bale started out as a LB. So talk of playing Redmond "out of position" is a bit meaningless.

Much like JWP, I think if he finds his scoring boots he could get a hatful. Just needs a couple of goals to settle himself down.

We have no real alternatives which is the problem. We have Jay that can't seem to stay fit for long and Long who can't score. This puts a hell of a lot on Austin as our only real scorer. We badly need another striker.

I can't disagree with you there, we're short of options. But that doesn't mean Claude is wrong about Redmond.

Depends who you want to listen to. The TV pundits say his new role is making him a fantastic threat to defences and commend Puel for changing his position. Fans think he is better as a winger as he was at Norwich drifting in and out of the side. Take your pick.
