As such it falls under dangerous play because it's threatens injury and prevents them from playing the ball for fear of injury.

If he had made contact then it falls under kicking an opponent but no contact was made

So if a player goes in high and two footed 5 yards from the box he can be red carded for wreckless/dangerous play but, because he made no contact and only made the opponent jump/pull out to avoid the tackle it will only be an indirect free kick?
I will watch for that in future games

Yes.. unless in the referee's opinion he attempting to kick the player.

In this instance, as the ball was there and defender went to kick it before Jagielka punched the ball, you'd say it was a genuine attempt to play the ball therefor falls under dangerous play as he didn't charge, kick, attempt to kick, jump at the player.
