Ye definitely above Fletchers. Greatest thing ever going there for a meal at lunchtime when you were a kid. What was it called??
Anyone local to the Kimberley Street area might remember a few of these, the hot cake shop on the corner of Kimberley Street and Argyle Street, they used to charge a couple of pennies extra for best butter but it was well worth it, the sweet shop on the opposite corner, Hicks Bakery on Wenlock Street, Gerald's Newsagents on Argyle Street, he was the perfect bloke, he would always let you off if you were a couple of pennies short, the fruit & veg shop next door, and finally Flamingo Club on Londesborough Street.
Joe sadly died last year. His son was working off the stall until the council served a notice to quit on him. There are no fishmongers in Hull indoor market now.
I know Joe died, unfortunately I was away on holiday and missed the funeral. Joe ran my kids football team. He was a great bloke. So is Glenn. Thats ridiculous, why would they want them out of there?
The first supermarkets in Hull were indeed Savemore's, one on George Street near Browns Book shop and before that a smaller one on Lowgate near the King Billy pub. I think Clifford Dunne was involved in them. His own supermarket opened a few years later on the ground floor of Pryme Street Multi Storey car park. Remember him selling some very dodgy Ben Sherman shirts for about £2 each and white Levi jeans. obviously counterfeits ( copies) but no-one seemed to care in those days. Goodfellows and FineFare were another early trend setterers in the supermarket game.
Poshest place I had been in. Famous for its "Business Man's Lunch", I recall. Went there with mi brother and had something bean sprout based on our way to get the train to Brid. Lost the whole lot over the side of the fishing boat. Didn't catch a thing.
It's getting redeveloped soon. The current stall holders have been offered units down Whitefriargate whilst the work is being undertaken
Yes Mrs Hankey was there when i was and i also remember Mr Rumsay getting married but couldn't remember what she was called before that. Must have been some right sordid goings on in that staff room. The marriage could have just been the tip of the iceberg .... Maybe there was reason Mrs Sergeant did the Sex ed... She was always in the Annex block which had adjoining doors to Mr Swinsons woodwork classes..... Not to mention the domestic whatever its called....
Boots was the one with the upstairs and had the front on King Eddy St and also came out opposite Debenhams. WH Smiths came out at the side of the centre opposite what was C&A and more importantly Shire (Though it wasn't quite as important when i was about 14)..... (Surely they are all still there aren't they?)
I know its not really Hull, but Hornsea Pottery was always good when they had Animals, play areas, the lake to feed the ducks. All the jars in the kitchen at home were all that ropey Green pattern (My mates parents had the ropey brown version). We also had mugs and plates if I'm not wrong.
Was it Chung Wah (sic). I remember my mother taking me there in the 50's. We were stood outside on the street checking out the menu, before going upstairs, when a pigeon crapped on her hat and coat. Can't remember if we still went in. When I reached drinking age Chung Wah (sic) was where we ended up after a night on the grog. They did the hottest curry I've ever tasted. The sweat would be literally pouring off you half way through the meal. Ah, memories.
Think I am going back further than you. Boots and Smiths are still in the Prospect centre. I think Smiths were probably in King Edward Street before they moved to Prospect Centre
No I'm not sure! First, I also thought it was W H Smiths then racked my ancient brain and decided it was Boots!! Years later it became Superdrug, maybe that's why I thought it was Boots.
Sorry about that i didn't realise. Now you mention it i do remember Boots being further along King Edward Street, nearly at Victoria Square i think. That must have been in the early 70s.
It's all coming back Phil. I remember the game when you broke your leg playing in goal for school. I was playing right back at the time.
I think you were both in my brothers year at Bricknell, as i am sure there was a Phil in goal in his year. The dates you said you was there could tie up.
