After the 2nd goal we didn't really need to defend. In fact, the whole game we didn't have to defend much. And when we did we failed.

That's what happens when you play teams like this, as soon as they have a reason not to attack anymore (i.e. go a goal up) then they can shut out...maybe grab more on the counter. It happened often in the Euros, it's how Leicester won most their games 2nd half of last season. It's happened to us a number of times over the last few years....where we can't break through these defences. At 60 mins I had that gut feeling we were never going to score, and often in these kind of games, we give away these goals with silly mistakes.

Sad we have not kept a clean sheet since the beginning of the season. Scoring five goals and conceding one is not too bad.

Ironically, I do think we have improved in terms of not being cut open as often as we were under Rodgers, and we're conceding far few shots on goal.

Problem is that teams are converting these low number of shots into goals at an alarming rate (I think it's 20% conversion which is the highest in the league).

Jurgen Klopp's answer to Liverpool's problem of conceding goals from set pieces? 'Make my players taller!'
    • Jurgen Klopp appeared as a guest on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football
    • Liverpool manager discussed football with Sportsmail's Jamie Carragher
    • German manager joked he needed to make his players 'taller' to prevent conceding goals from set pieces
    • Reds boss was also confused by the title odds that make his side second favourites to win the Premier League

Matip: Why we'll need to clock up clean sheets
    Chris Shaw
Liverpool's goalscoring exploits have been creating headlines so far this season but Joel Matip is eager to increase the clean sheet tally too.
The Reds have plundered 24 goals in their eight matches so far this season, including hauls of four or more in a single game on four separate occasions.
At the other end, though, only two shut-outs have been achieved – neither in the Premier League – and Matip is aware of the need to change that statistic to ensure Jürgen Klopp’s side maintain their promising start to the campaign.
“A solid defence always helps to win games and it is always necessary for a good team,” the centre-back said in Saturday’s matchday programme.
“We have to improve but we know this and we will work hard towards getting better and keeping clean sheets because sometimes we may only be able to score one goal and we want that to be enough to win.
“It will take hard work but that is no problem for us. We have a lot of good quality in our team and I am sure we will get better as the season progresses.”
Matip was partnered in defence by Ragnar Klavan for the Anfield clash with Hull City last weekend, with Dejan Lovren ruled out due to a viral infection.
Liverpool’s dominance of the encounter meant the summer signings were not called on too often but they impressed with their composure when tasked with stopping the Tigers.
And the No.32 echoed the sentiments of the manager, James Milner and others in explaining why strength in depth in all areas is so important for the team.
“Competition is always good in every position and it will help bring the best out of me,” added Matip.
“I have to be better and I want to be better. Having that quality of player around the squad means that if we have injuries – as we have in the first few weeks of the season – there are enough players of a high calibre to come into the team.
“I am also self-confident enough to say that if I am at a good level, I will play and I will be able to help the team.”

    don't worry about that stat.

the English prem is full of blazing shots form all over and frankly that not real football.

In really terms the english prem having 25 shots a game and 5 on target type of stuff is just wild stupid hack ball stuff.

the goals we are seeing are from errors like that Chelsea goal.. really poor stuff where a real genuine chance is coughed up.

The hull goal is narrow margins and again klopp highlight klavan not really getting his position right before the ball was delivered and clyne went asleep. the ball could have fallen a foot either way and no goal but it fell right at the hull guys feet.

If we are seeing these types of chances, as in real goal scoring chances then the improvement needed is specific and actionable. follow the runs, how you work together, the space you leave etc etc.

The Hull goal was a foul, the ball is easily cleared by Wijnaldum without Maguire jumping in from behind and elbowing him in the head

Also the goal scored by Leicester should not have stood according to referee of referees(Howard Webb).

    Klopp on... defending set-pieces
“We have improved already. It’s not a big number but we still have to work on it. We don’t have the tallest team in the league. I need to make them taller!” “We don’t have the physical quality for set-piece defending so we need to find creative solutions like Wijnaldum blocking. Henderson and Lallana have to block and the rest, our best headers, have to be in the situation. But for that goal we only watched the ball, we weren’t really in the situation.” “When I had a lot of tall players we did man marking because we could make an advantage in the challenge. Here we have to find a solution. It looks much better in training!! We have to work at it. Most teams struggle sometimes from set-pieces because it’s different here to other countries in the six-yard box.”

i rest my case. WIjnaldum is a blocker... so if a guy has to compete for the ball then he has to compete. wijnaludm needed to be colser to him to stop him getting that leap.

and klavan should have got it.

and clyne should not have lost his man.

Teams will always create chances and they will always score done goals from said chances. All we can do add a team is minimise the number of chances they get.

That's essentially what I'm saying - we are reducing the number chances however either:

    A) the opposition are very clinical against us

    B) or we are gifting very few but high quality chances each game
