That must have been a good experience - I really wanted to go on the Erasmus programme, was very tempted to study in Hollland but in the end decided to go on a sandwich degree and work for a year before my last year. But we won't be doing Erasmus for much longer... :emoticon-0105-wink:

My experience of most 'foreign language' teachers is that they are from that country - ie both the French teachers in my school were French and the German teacher in my wife's school was German. So I'd imagine we'd just try and recruit direct from Spain. It might be interesting teaching Arabic in schools, would be very useful and open doors with the way the world is going...

Should a working age immigrant be allowed to use the excuse of "not speaking the lingo"
as a reason not to work?

I thought the problem was that they're stealing all the jobs from the hard done by Englanders as they're prepared to work for minimum wage?

What if it's not them using it as an excuse but the employers using it as a reason not to employ them instead?

Does that even happen? Lots of people with little to no English do work. Often in jobs a Brit wouldn't do.

I have much more of a gripe with a Brit who just can't be arsed.

Agreed. I'm not aware of unemployed people who weren't sanctioned on the basis that they can't speak English.

Yup. Either they are stealing our jobs or they are not working? which is it?
Also EU migrants cannot claim benefits until they have lived here AND have worked here, for 4 years.

I don't need to, because I have a job that pays me more than minimum wage.
    Would I though? If I didn't?
yes, I would have no choice.

Think how much a car wash would cost if we left booted out Eastern Europeans.

Yes and I have done so before. I see no shame in starting at the bottom of the employment ladder.

From an employer perspective, I am far more likely to employ someone who is already working than someone who thinks certain jobs are beneath them.

If I had to then yes. Are you advocating British people living off the state because they refuse to work for minimum wage whilst simultaneously criticising immigrants for being prepared to work for the minimum wage instead of living off the state (which they are all accused of doing whilst also being condemned for stealing British jobs)?

    Nonsensical viewpoint.

One of my daughters in law is Slovakian. She speaks English fluently, and is able to read it to. However, she now wants to take the citizenship exam. I don't know if any of you have ever seen this? She asked me to look at it. I'm English born and bred and educated to degree standard. I couldn't answer half the questions about our history, or our laws. Stuff I'd forgotten years ago, or just didn't know the answer to.

On the subject of learning the language of the country you live in. To some extent it's up to you. If you want to isolate yourself in your own little community, as so many Brits do over here, you can do that and pay to take a translator with you when you have to go to the doctor, etc. ( no they are not provided!) but you miss out on so much.
Many Spanish understand and speak reasonable English - especially the younger ones - but if you want to be fully accepted, learn to speak their language. If they see you making an effort, most will help you. Because I can speak and read Spanish, I can easily associate with both the Spanish and ex-pat communities.

The Spanish have many preconceptions about us Brits too - one being that we're all piss artists. If you make an effort to integrate, you will both learn that most of your preconceptions about each other are wrong.
