It's beyond embarrassing that we're sending that clueless lying buffoon around the globe to promote the UK.

It is, although I used to work in a place where staff from different countries used to service clients from their own country. Some of them spoke little or no English but they dealt purely with people who spoke their language.

See that I agree with, if you have lived her for 20 years and don't speak English, then why the **** should we have to pay for a translator. You have made a conscious choice not to learn our language, so it should be at your expense.
Of course then comes the issue of, what if this person has a medical emergency and are allergic to a certain medication and is unable to communicate this to a doctor.
Though a lot of our NHS staff speaks Urdu or Bengali anyway.

Most, if not all other countries in the EU and beyond do not offer state funded support for non-indigenous languages on anything remotely like the scale the UK do. In most, the best you could expect would be the contact details of a translator you could hire.

I think you've got the right idea in sticking to a single sentence using one syllable words.

Out of interest, in this magical scenario where immigrants must learn English or else:

How long do they have to learn?

What sort of test do they sit? What's the pass mark?

Is the plan to put all those who fail this test on a boat and push it into the sea?

What if half a family pass and the other half fails?

Can we give the indigenous population the same test and boot out those who fail?

Exactly the point I was about to make.
What if they fail? Just deport them? Who covers the cost of that?
Do we split families up if some pass and some don't?

    It's very idealistic.
Yes, ideally they would all learn English, but really it's unenforceable without HUGE cost to the taxpayer and lots of strife amongst immigrant families

Another thing to throw into the mix is to increase the level of languages taught at schools to our children - maybe even making it compulsory to learn a second language up to GCSE level (or a third if your in a Welsh Lang/Gaelic school) - this would help. It's a bit embarrassing tbh going abroad and seeing these people conversing in multiple languages but all most Brits can do is shout louder in English to be heard. It could help with the integration issue here as well.

Personally I believe that part of applying for citizenship should be a language test and a culture test so that people at least know a bit of the background to the country's culture and what great things we have done. Though of course you don't have to be a citizen to live in this country, and I agree that you should be able to speak at least a conversational level of the language if you are living in the country.

If they can't recite the whole of God Save the Queen at passport control then it's straight back on the plane to Somalia. Doesn't matter if you aren't from Somalia.

Should be part of the Sensible Party/Armchair manifesto.

These are the issues aren't they?

I also feel some people see someone with darker skin wearing Islamic or Hindu clothing not speaking English and assumes they can't speak English. But the truth is that you speak with another person in the language you feel most comfortable in and is easiest.

Would be great if more Brits took up languages. I was in the Erasmus programme in Spain and it was a great experience. French is the default foreign language in most schools but Spanish would be more useful.

Would take a while though I suspect to get the required number of teachers.

There are structures in place and I have no issue with us funding the education of English to help provide a more integrated society.
    https://www.gov.uk/english-language/overview

My point was really about making it so easy not to learn English that people don't bother.

A number of friends have parents who speak very little English and don't speak English at home. If their parents need access to services they go with them, there is no expectation on their part that a version in Chinese, singalese or Bulgarian will be provided.
