Former Red Danny Murphy says the Portuguese was devastated to lose out to Benitez.

Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy says Jose Mourinho was devastated when he was overlooked for the manager’s job at Anfield back in 2004.
Current Manchester United boss Mourinho, who at the time was in charge of FC Porto, wanted to be Gerard Houllier’s successor but the Reds’ hierarchy opted to appoint Rafa Benitez instead. Mourinho went on to take over at Chelsea instead.
Murphy told talkSPORT: “When Benitez was appointed at Liverpool, it was between him and Mourinho. I know that for a fact. Mourinho wanted the Liverpool job massively.
“But Liverpool basically went with Benitez, because he’d just won the Spanish league title and UEFA Cup with Valencia and they thought that was more solid an appointment than someone who had only done it in Portugal.
"I know Mourinho was massively disappointed.”

And as the say the rest is history...

With his record afterwards we would have been guaranteed to win the league. Instead we spent time flirting with it with Rafa :bandit:

What a classless **** Maureen is, he said in his book that he'll find Wenger outside of football "and break his face"
Wenger is already no oil painting and an 'orrible twat but there's no need for threats from the man yoo manager.

    nahhhhh.

with his record he's have flopped terible and utd would have had to appoint giggs instead this year as he'd have gone nowhere.

With the squad we had he was NEVER coming to us. we only won CL by virtue of tought defending and alonso and garcia signings. no way was mourinho coming in.

yeah got a huge slice of luck on more than one occasion in that year.

    monaco in final.

seconds from going out before away goal at old trafford etc etc etc.

do you honestly think mourinho would have done any better with mr traore at LB and a 20mil budget when abramovich bought drogba for more than that alone before mourinho was even confirmed?

I think we are missing the phackt that LFc in 2005 to 2008 developed massively on the back of CL football due to that cl win.

cheslea had 500mil to spend o nplayers. utd spent shed loads too... if we'd had mourinho maybe he'd have finished 8th after one year then told us to chuff it.... in other words mourinho moved to a side who finished 2nd under ranieri and who bought several players before he arrive making them very competitive and he won the league easy. he moved to inter when they were competing and winning and got a treble. then moved to real again mega bucks.

his porto team with respect to it was not like it was completely unheard of to be winning in Portugal. put it like this they won 5 in a row before a 3 year break form titles which has when he was hired and they won 2 gain before he left... and in those 3 years they were 2nd twice and 3rd once.... so... yeah great like marvellous.

I just don't like his style of play or his style of management.
It's not entirely out of the blue though - I've read from other sources that he wanted to come to us. Obviously I've no idea how true it is but it has been out there before.

Safe to say at some point in his career he's thought about the possibility of managing Liverpool

I am fairly sure he had "choices" and before the CL win he probably had some discussion with LFC at same time as Rafa. I am VERY sure however he'd made his mind up before we had.

I am confident that i remember mourinho tossing the medal into the crowd after CL in 2004 and knowing where he was off to and LFC only appointed rafa in mid june that year. I am sure he was appointed to Chelsea before we appointed rafa.

My googling shows 16th june for rafa and 2nd june for mourinho

also just a note cheslea spent double what we did that summer and LFC had already bought cisse for houllier before rafa arrives so mourinho could not have got essien, drogba and carvalho for us.. end of.

IMO he as always going to cheslea, probably flirted with us but once cheslea ponied up he was always going there. I do not know if LFc had rafa positively lined up but i would suggest we went and got him long before that CL final too.

Wouldn't surprise me if Murphy(and other players)were itk at the time, Moores liked socialising with the players, its not beyond the realms of possibility that he told one or more of the players who wanted the the job and who he wanted as manager etc, just watched Maureen's presser to see if he'd deny it, but not a mention.

I agree. It was between the two of them that's just a fact, we went with Benitez, who knows how it would have turned out if we'd gone the other way. JM almost certainly wouldn't have had an open cheque book though.

Houllier's reign was dull as **** but he'd have looked like Guardiola of we'd have appointed Mourinho after him!

And to think Woy was after Rafa too... I'd have stopped watching football altogether with that trio in a row!!!

To be fair, Mourinho was a fantastic up and coming manager. The Chelsea sides he created first time were actually attackng sides built on an impeccable defence.

He seems to have lost his mojo though.

Has anyone read the collection of articles in the mail from the new book coming out about Mourinho? Some damning stuff there about him wanting to sign 'fat boy' Rooney and break Arsene Wenger's face amongst other things.
