It really isn't odd to say Newcastle received £6m for Sissoko, not in the slightest - because they only received £6m for him, and won't be getting a penny more until 31st August 2017.

The deal actually makes perfect sense because of the variables in play, namely:
i.) Sissoko wanted to leave Newcastle
ii.) Newcastle were set on a £30m fee
iii.) Everton bid, yet Sissoko had no interest in joining Everton

That set of circumstances put Newcastle in a bind, as they had a player that wanted to leave and a transfer fee stuck in their head that they refused to budge from, but were lacking the important part of the scenario: a buying club, which we took advantage of and placed Newcastle in a position of being unable to negotiate and also needing to save face - because otherwise they'd have a pissed off player on the books until January and lose the initiative in transfer negotiations. You just need to look at Kvetch Brom's continued stupidity with Berahino to see how that could've worked out for them.

I'm not questioning any of the reasons or logic or evidence for your 6m figure. That's not what I'm talking about. At no point was I saying "What?! The deal wasn't like that! Why would it be?". We've heard some rumours. I'm happy, for the sake of argument, to accept it as fact. I was never putting that into question.

Basically I'm saying this: You say that Newcastle did not have a net transfer spend of 0. You're saying it's -24m cos they didn't get the whole of the 30m for Sissoko yet. So in that case have you analysed all of their transfers both in and out but taking into account only the portion of the fee that was paid/received this summer? So you've not got Yedlin down as a 5m expense, just the portion of the 5m that was paid in the first installment? Cos you're only counting the money that Newcastle paid/received this very summer? Their purchase of Dwight Gayle did not cost 10m - just the portion of the 10m that they paid this summer?

Cos unless you are doing that then isn't it odd to cherry-pick only the Sissoko transfer to do that with?

This whole transfer is a bit weird. He's not our typical signing. He's a bit older, has a bit of a difficult reputation, is expensive for Spurs, if we pay the whole £30m and is unlikely to 'train on'.

My understanding is that payment of transfer fees often run over a number of years but it is normally less than 5 years and 'normally' more money is paid 'up front' (even for goalkeepers). A few years ago it was common to pay about 50% up front and the rest over 3 years, as I recall it. Given the vast amount of money just dumped into the PL, it would be weird if clubs, as a whole, were asking for longer to pay transfer fees.

We're a special case because we're cash strapped due to the stadium costs right now. I get that and Newcastle would accept that too. I get that they would agree to us having nothing down and 0% interest over the length of the contract. Most large domestic items are available on such terms. Newcastle will get their minimum sum of money over time and what we would pay in 'real terms', related to PL football income and Spurs income particularly, over that period would make £30m a potential bargain. Let's face it, when the new overseas TV rights contracts money and Spurs new sponsorship deals kick in, we're going to get asked more for signings than we are now. So, that makes sense.

However, we're supposed to have the bloke on HP. We don't really own him until we make the final payment. If we stop paying, then Ashley sends the Repo Man round to 'Sponsors Name Here' Stadium to put him on a pick-up truck and "they take Sissoko(les) to Newcastle." Sorry, it was there - I had to use it. At which point they keep an unhappy player?/sell him again?/shoot him and claim the insurance money? What if he's injured? What if he gets religious and packs the game in? What if he comes over all Adebayor and just stops trying? The contractual terms on such a situation are pretty much impossible to draft such that both sides will accept them, I would have thought. So, in essence, it's a 5 year loan with a £6m p.a. loan fee at the end of which, we get a worthless asset or during which time they get back an angry and far less valuable one?

Hmm......I think that may be good for us. God knows, I wish we'd signed Adebayor on those terms and Fazio and Soldado...and...

If we sold Sissoko say in two years time, would any money be owed to NUFC?

Boooooom! Great news, what a contrast from a few years back where I shamefully wanted him gone, to now being chuffed to have one of our best players commit his future.

    Tthis tweet is so accuarte:

Maybe it's just because I don't follow other clubs' news outside of actual games, but to the best of my knowledge this deluge of long-term commitments is a first for the PL era and is surely a real sign of intent from the club, as well as belief from the players.

They also do so in the full knowledge that the contract period remaining
is a parameter used in the Levy tax calculation for them.

He played against Everton in their surprise 2-0 win the other night, as did former defender Seb Bassong.

Not sure about the league though.

He started against Everton the other night, came on at half time against Wigan and was a second half sub against Cardiff.

I think there are subtle differences in his hair each time.

    Inconsistent combing.

I recall a thread about players/managers being in it for the money and little else. Whilst we're massively increasing our wage bill seems a strange time to bring up the issue and state that I really don't believe that to be the case with our players at the moment. Kyle Walker and Danny Rose would walk into both Manchester sides and could probably add 50-100% on what we're paying them. Same for Mousa and Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli at a huge list of clubs.

However, they're committing themselves to Spurs. Some of them for the rest of their careers or definitely the best years of them. There is a collective cohesion in this group and the best player to show this? Someone who has left (temporarily?) - Clinton N'Jie:

“I have known the Lyon dressing room and I discovered the OM one, but it has nothing in common with London. We lived like brothers. The guys are there two hours after training. There is a games room. Two or three times a week, there were dinners.”

You can see it on the pitch with everyone in it for the team. You can see it on the bench and from the Academy players as a group and also in the way they fit into the first team when they play. If Jack Grealish was at Spurs he wouldn't be chucking his career away.
