I'm no 'phoney Beatlemania' merchant but by quoting this bloke aren't you valuing his prophecies above the views of others?

The Clash were more than "just a band" as were The Stones. They changed the world around them and the people living on it. It doesn't mean they weren't full of **** sometimes and some of their stuff can be ordinary but "just a band"? Nah!

Where is the tangible evidence of that (ie the point - just a band) ??

Changing hearts and minds is an ethereal thing and tends not to produce tangible evidence but I saw this a while back and thought it worth keeping:

In an interview towards the end of his life, Strummer said: “It's said I changed people’s lives. They tell me every day. Stopped them from jumping out of windows. Or made them go to university and try to make a difference with their lives.”

He and the band made a contribution and strove for change. Ideological and cultural walls came down and self-determination and creativity comes from it. Wear a Clash T shirt and go out and about in it and people come and talk to you about what they meant to them. They increased the human condition. But no statues and rightly so.

Well I would say the works of Tom Paine, Karl Marx etc have tangible evidence of the
extent to which they changed "hearts and minds" . They truly did change the world.

So "changing the world" is a matter of scale.
As of now, the works of The Clash et al are not in that league (not to say they won't be -
    time will tell) .

Not sure anyone changes the world on your own and I am not one for pedestals. But the music of The Clash and The Jam certainly influenced me and many more from my age group to take a look at the world we live in and take an interest and understand things that with out their influence we may have ignored, probably nothing life changing, but its part of who I am and will always be grateful that they helped to open my eyes

Tony Pulis is to be inducted into the League Managers' Association having served as manager for 1,000 games this weekend. It only took 999 to have an entertaining one.

    Anyone been watching the cricket?

Tomorrow is the last day of the County Championship with 3 teams still in with a chance of winning it. It's been incredible stuff. Let's hope there's no rain in north London to ruin it.

Tony's view of today's football is that:

"Players live a different life now, in a world where they get everything, they've become film stars."

That would make Mr Pulis the director but his work won't be winning any Oscars:

For his time at Stoke City and The Britannia - 'Cold Mountain', 'Rough Stuff' and 'When Aaron met Gurney'.

For his take the bonus (very early) and run at Crystal Palace - 'Other People's Money' and 'Cheques, Lies and Big Old Mistake'

His career at West Brom, so far, is encapsulated in his seminal work - '****ty ****ty Boing Boing'

    Yes, I'm bored.

Pulis : 999 games of Grindhouse production, and one of pure brilliance (Palace 3 - Poool 3) .

Congratulations to Middlesex on winning the County Championship for the first time since 1993. It's been a long time coming but what a way to do it! I think that today's game with Yorkshire saw the season's 2 best teams fighting it out for the title (Somerset were definitely third best) and a tremendous end to the season. Bloody marvelous from Toby Roland-Jones, bowling a hat-trick to win the game and record figures of 6-54 and 10-127 in the match. Is a triple of Wasps, Spurs and Middlesex all being title winners possible?

  15. No, but Sarries, Spurs & Middlesex is an option <laugh>
(Been a fan since their days down the road in Southgate)

Most exciting CC game I've ever seen. Drama throughout. I think Yorkshire would have won had Bresnan stayed in. Sporting declaration by Middlesex which ultimately proved to be a very shrewd one as it gave them the best chance of winning. Somerset were never in it unless the weather had intervened - there was always going to be a result at Lords one way or another.

I think I've discovered the real reason Eriksen's contract negotiations dragged on so long: Tripper had used it all the club's ink
