It is relevant to the post from Brexit, which is what I was replying to. If you talk about exports about 44% of our total exports go to the EU but only between 8-17% of the other 27 countries total exports come to the UK, so proportionately the UK will suffer more than the EU if tariffs are applied. Do you understand now?

Why will we suffer when we will receive a lot more in tariffs?

    <doh>

We will pay a lot more for our imports because of the tariff and it'll make our products much less competitive in our main market - the EU - than products currently available in the EU.

Hence the whole reason for Free Trade Agreements in the 1st place, and why the EU has negotiated around 50 or more FTAs in addition to the EU Free Trade Zone (whatever you want to call it). And why there's free trade agreement 'trading blocs' set up all across the world.

Who does he think will actually pay the tariffs?
It won't be the exporter, it will be the consumer through price increases.

I think there's the problem right there - It isn't sensible to consider these issues.

I think there is probably some polling evidence available for those that care to look. But in fairness it's just an opinion, based on talking to people who aren't especially allied to one party or another - the floating voters who tend to decide elections.

When economists talk about protectionism, trade barriers and tarrifs, they are only rarely talking about anything so simple as a specific fee levied on imported goods. They are talking about the comlex beaurocratic and legal hurdles exporters are often faced with when trying to gain access to oversees markets. The sort of regulation that can often defeat smaller businesses because they do not have the resources required to overcome these hurdles. The smaller exporters often rely on the support of their national Chamber of Commerce for help in this regard, but the UK Chamber of Commerce is likely to be rather busy for some time to come, don't you think?

Can one of the minority let Pete know that he's a clueless ****

Lloyd's of London considers setting up EU subsidiary

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-37437732

Insurance market Lloyd's of London is working on "contingency plans" to ensure it can trade across Europe when the UK leaves the EU.

Chief executive Inga Beale told the BBC that Lloyd's may set up a subsidiary or branches in mainland Europe.

She estimates that 4% of revenues could be lost after Brexit because Lloyd's would lose its licence - or passporting - rights to operate across the EU.

The fallout from Brexit "is a major issue for us to deal with", she said.

Nothing to worry about there. One of the oldest companies to be associated with the City of London, a business that started out in coffee houses underwriting shipping ventures in the 17th Century, one mentioned by Samuel Pepys in his diaries, is afraid for it's post Brexit future; but we'll take back control of our borders. We won't let the ****s leave, or does border control only work in one direction?

The whole world's economy is hurt by tariffs, & the whole world's economy benefits from free movement of goods and labour. Voters, & therefore politicians, have a tendency not to see this.

I generally agree with you, but you cant have free movement if you cant handle the mass influx you get with it, small amounts of immigration is good, mass immigration in a very short space of time is not.

Make up your mind. You seem to say that charging tariffs for imports is bad for us and being charged tariffs is bad for us but the EU charging tariffs is good for them and being charged tariffs is good for the EU.
