Had a bit of a reunion with some college mates on Saturday as its 20 years since we started at Hull College.

Went round all the boozers in the old town and started out at 'Head of Steam' in Trinity Square.

Fantastic night and great beers, no agro anywhere.

Only saying this as it's about 3 years since we all went out together in Hull.

A real credit to the city!

    Nice one.
Theres some excellent pubs in the Old Town with great real ales.
I was in Head of Steam a couple of weeks back and thought it was a nice place.
I went in the revamped Corn Exchange and that looks good now.

I did it midweek in the summer and it was dead and dire; a pity as it really has some decent pubs.

A regular Friday and Saturday night occurrence for me and Hull College Rugby Union mates back in the late 50's. Pubs included the White Hart, Bluebell Inn, Corn Exchange and Tivoli Hotel.
Bluebell Inn had a Friday night jazz group in those days. Had a sing song in the Corn Exchange before last drinks in the Tivoli before heading off to the City Hall dance.
Tivoli was special for me as my parents ran it when I was born. Lived there for a couple of years before the war resulted in my parents re-locating to East Hull.

When I came to Hull with my wife in 2010 I took her on a mid-week visit to the pubs I had frequented back then, except the Tivoli which had been demolished. The room at the back of the Corn Exchange where we had our sing song was still the same and I had a photo taken next to Elvis which I put on here a couple of years ago.

Had a really good day recently in Old Town before we left for the USA for the next six months. Park and ride bus to bottom of Alfred Gelder Street, then down to museum area. A quick look at the Arctic Corsair, along to the Lion and Key for lunch and a pint. Then along the river Hull to see the new stage area over the dry dock. Followed the walk way to Corporation Pier and horse wash then looked back at the Deep. Past the Minerva and Green Bricks (too old to pub crawl these days) and the marina. Over A63 to the indoor market ( only place I know where you can get jumbo raw peanuts) and Hepworths Arcade. Along Whitefriargate and through Victoria Square and all the work areas towards Paragon Station and Brook Street to catch our park and ride bus back to Hessle.

    Yeah I went last week
    It was good
A little more 'restauranty ' than I expected (their previous one Henry Yeast was very informal)
    Decent beer options
I had a steak which was good (£22) but was tempted by the octopus

One which is better to go with Mrs or couples rather than a bunch of lads (which is what I'd done) "4 stars **** - AA Tash"

    Yes its a lot better.
I hadnt been for years until a couple of years ago.
Theres some new pubs, William Hawkes and Old House down Scale lane.
    Theres also Walters down there.
Theres Furley and Co down the side of Princes Quay.
Head of Steam and Corn Exchange have had major revamps and are a lot better now.

I haven't been out around the old town for 15 years - Is the sailmakers arms on High Street still open?

Sundays are brilliant in there, a very informal open mike thingy, some cracking singers there. My family made me get up and read a poem I wrote about my wife's day at castle hill, went down quite well. My brother in law started singing and a cpl of old fellows joined him on guitar, had a really good day that day, nothing organised, it just happened....
Oh!! And the Sunday dinners wer bloody nice also.....
