Hi All, After a few puzzles being posted - I though I would post this one. If you can respond in a PM then it keeps the game going for others. "You see a t-shirt worth £97 and you don't have any cash so you borrowed £50 from your Mum and £50 from your Dad. So now you have £100. Since that t-shirt is £97 you are left with £3 change. You return £1 to your Mum and £1 to your Dad and you're left with £1 for yourself. So now you owe your mom £49 and your dad £49.......so £49 plus £49 is £98.....plus the £1 you have is £99. . . What happened to the other £1?" Answer on a postcard please
Devon has got it - and so has redstripe - a few have tried and they are not quite there. Nice taxing on this!
I think that, now the week-end has passed, you should reveal all Don't forget to show your workings out
Yes Sir! The answer is - there is no missing £1 coin. This puzzle is very good at masking the actual equations you need to work it out. The fact that the puzzle has the working out of £49 + £49 = £98 once you have paid back the money to your parents is true - but once you have paid back the £1 each to each parent you have then only borrowed a grand total of £98 not £100. You put £1 in your pocket, plus the £97 for your t-shirt and that brings you to the total borrowed sum of £98 - not the stated £100. This puzzle is used to test the brains handling of negative numbers. Even though the puzzle reads correctly and you brain immediately gets tricked into working the sum out as it shows in the puzzle, it is in fact inaccurate. Good one though - will hopefully have another good one for everyone on Friday!
This is a stupid puzzle because everyone knows that If a skate buys anything with borrowed money he has no intention of paying anyone back.
Very clever Mike, I must admit I was completely stumped, but maths and logic has never been my strong point.
