Its going to be a really weird league. Newcastle in third place have lost three times already Villa have only won once this season. Derby are a point away from the drop zone Cardiff are bottom of the table Barnsley are in the play off places
Great to see Cardiff at the bottom. Lets hope they will play in the 1st div next season along with DreadWall.
Agree that definitely shouldn't get carried away but nice to have 6 points in the week and move away from the relegation zone (and leave them in it) - and also ease some pressure off Monk and off the team. Will hopefully mean they'll start to take some confidence in to games and even stability but agree there are going to be bigger tests and there's also going to be some cock-ups along the way, Nice to see us in 4-2-3-1 again as think it suits us better, particularly Hernandez - I think some of the reason he tried 4-4-2 was to accommodate the new signings of Roofe and Antonsson but Wood despite not being by any stretch of the imagination perfect is best in the lone striker role and does it better than he is often given credit for (or at least the team does better when he plays it) and maybe with a run he might even start to improve the goal count.
Truth is, his days have gone. Brain knows what he wants to do but the body can't do it. Cardiff will struggle for goals this season
Finally got my Virgin set up. Off air all day. Only upside about it all was that Sky were slow to take the telly off air, so I managed to watch the match. And I'm glad I did. Didn't see a great improvement in the first half. Could easily have gone in 2-0 down, but the woodwork & a load of scrambling saved us. Started playing better in the second half, and got our just rewards. Definitely just, IMO. We were simply better than them. My personal highlight was watching Ayling bomb down the wing & get a good cross in. First time I've witnessed it. He also blocked a cross 4 or 5 times, getting booked for one of them, and again, it's the first time I've witnessed it. Downside for me is the way we continue to handle corners. Still no-one on the back post & no-one up front to release the pressure when we clear. Worries me. I always remember O'Leary saying that he worried when we won a corner, as we were more likely to concede a goal than score one. We'll never emulate the positive aspect of that statement as we never have anyone up front that can break away & score. Another aspect I don't like is that we quite often, when winning a free kick in the opposition half, pass the ball bloody backwards to the defence! When we have an advantage!! No point in getting carried away though - the last 2 teams we've beaten are in the bottom 2 places in the league.
WJ. Very fair assessment as always. One thing that worried me was the amount of set pieces (corners or free kicks near the box) we gave away. That said, Jannsson was immense so maybe we played to our strengths
Agreed. They mentioned that on the telly too. Didn't seem to be so many in the 2nd half, so perhaps words were said at half time.
Good management if so. And credit to whoever scouted the Swedish guy, be that Cellino, Monk or Clotet (or even the furniture salesman)..
