I'm actually wrong on that score, wasn't it €30 million or £26.5 million when all the add-ons were included?

£26 million using today's exchange rate, it was around £20 million at the time.

So you don't think that Man Utd's bank accounts have ever seen a penny which has come directly from any of their shareholders when public or any of their owners when they went private in '05? Do me a favour, have you seen the transfers you lot made when the Glazers were buying their shares, Ronaldo, Saha, Rooney, Heinze, Vidic & Carrick were all pretty big fees with only the fee for Beckham coming in (There was also Veron but you sold him at a loss)

Moral of the story is, spending big only wins you things if you are NOT Liverpool.

Well if you're going to include Carrick and Vidic, then you should also include fees received for RVN and Mikel. And United's operating profits have easily covered transfer expenditure throughout the period since they went public.

Would you like to repeat that sonny? You're clearly so very far up your own arse, you can't see the wood for the trees, or a serious post from a fun one. By the way, I've never done in vivo research. You sound like Alan Partridge with a heavy hangover.

Bloody hell. I can't leave you lot alone for 5 nibutes. I'm away from this thread for a day and it's decended into a straightforward slanging match. Where has all the wit, humour and genuine banter gone? We'll be back to 'net spend' soon. That particular topic almost drove me away from BBC 606. Come on lads - a bit of creativity please lads!

The only time Utd raised money from shareholders was to expand the North Stand in 1995. When the Glazers were buying shares, the money went to the other shareholders and not to the club. The season before the Glazers took over, we made an operating profit of £58.3 million, which is enough on its own to pay for Rooney, Vidic and Carrick (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/4269991.stm). Heinze was sold for a profit, and the £25 million we got for Becks was enough to cover the combined cost of both Saha and Ronaldo. Since we expanded the North Stand, Utd has always made enough cash to pay for all our transfers with no need for outside funding.

On a completely unrelated note, RHC do you know a guy called Sam Gregson? He was a mate of mine at uni who I've just found out is doing his PhD at CERN. Not sure what department he's in, and I think he's still living in Cambridge so I'm not sure how he fits into the overall structure.

SIMON GREGSON???!!! No Swarbs, never heard of him. You do know I'm not at CERN don't you? I just take a major interest in the work going on there. I doubt if there's much call for a molecular biologist-cum-life science headhunter over there. I have an old mate over there who's working on it and had been from the very beginning. I've lost touch with him though, unfortunately.

Ah fair enough. I knew you weren't actually working there, but given your interest I figured you might know a couple of people on the 'inside'. It was worth a random shot ;)

leave the thread, leave the board, it's not too late for you! Run and hide RHC, run and hide. Go anywhere (not to Ireland, go to London or Asia, that's where we all live) He will find you, and he will talk about transfer fees, george best, baconface, and referee's!

...... but curiously end up home at the end of the day in Surrey or Asia - or in the wonderful world of KPR; Surrey is in Asia, where the Whiskey comes from.
