In some more summer transfer fallout, AS are reporting that the reason Isco remained at Los Ladrones is because he insisted he stay put - which doesn't in any way sound like he's content to collect £80k a week while sitting on the bench. No, it doesn't. Really it doesn't.

Will see what his play stats are at the start of the winter transfer window,
to see the truth of that.

His contract runs out in 2018, so he'll presumably have to give another club a reason to pick him up at some point.

Agent Jon Smith gives an insight into the career future of a young PL player whose contract expires this summer. He is unwilling to name the player concerned. I wonder who it might be?

“He’ll go [abroad] for £400,000 compensation because he can. If it went to tribunal here [in the UK], it would be £20m-plus. Then he’ll play there for as short a time as the regulations allow and he’ll come back here for £10m. Maybe £15m. And the club he’s parked at will do very nicely. They’ll pay the agents a nice fee. And the player will make a lot more money, and he’ll pay them a fee. And thank you very much.

Might the foreign club that Saido...sorry, the player, be parked at, be Standard Liege by any chance?

    I love a good <Standard> Liege.
But will the current manager of said player be as pissed off as Fergie was ... ??

Great news about Winks. Him, Onomah and Dier are racking up those contract renewals though! Think all three have signed two extensions in roughly the past 6 months.

Better for the club than offering bucket loads without them proving their worth and it also says a lot about their self belief that they back themselves to earn better contracts so are prepared to take the incremental pay rises.
A squad of non mercenaries sounds good to me

I don't get it. Winks has played all of 3 hours of first team football for the first team yet is rewarded for this with a new contract? Not having a dig at the player at all, it just seems strange that we aren't playing the patient game and only offering new contracts to players who have established themselves in first team squad. Otherwise it just cheapens the whole strategy and seems to encourage underperformance.

If we offered every promising youngster to walk through our doors a new contract every few months, we'd still be stuck with the likes of Hotlby, Fryers, Smith, Fredericks etc.

Today's entry for the Pilchard Award: reporting that Newcastle had a net transfer spend of £0.00 because of the Sissoko fee

No, they received £6m for Sissoko and won't be until 2021 when they receive £30m for him, meaning their net transfer spend was -£24m. Any accountant, or for that matter anyone with a GCSE in maths, would be able to tell you that.

He's probably on relatively (very relatively) **** money and it prevents him from buggering off on the cheap.

The contract he signed last season was worth £10k a week (at least according to FM16) and I doubt his wages have been bumped up beyond £15k.

Not sure I agree. I think it makes a lot of sense to be tying our best youngsters down to as many years as possible, I get that there's a risk of the fact they're still unproven and may end up another Obika rather than a Kane but when taking into account that we're likely going to heavily rely on sensible youth promotion over the next few years due to the new stadium, getting Winks and co tied down for the foreseeable future is key - whether that be from a playing perspective in terms of becoming a first team player (hopefully) or from a commercial one in which we can sell at a great profit (see Caulker, Townsend, Mason etc). We have a crop of youngsters who I think the fans as well as the club feels have a great future ahead, they're a step up from the level of the names you mentioned (though Holtby and Fryers weren't academy products, Holtby was also on huge wages).

I suspect that this will be greeted by a mixed response... <whistle>

I'm happy about it. I'd like to see him start in the three against Gilligham.

I've said it before but rumours are that Poch really likes him as a person and that he's very popular in the dressing room. I don't predict him to have a Rose-like transformation but if he's happy to be here and the club wants him here, then fair play, congrats to him on the new deal.

According to The Sun on Sunday, Chelsea intend to sign Ben Davies. I don't think so, boys.

According to Stan Collymore, Harry Kane's 1 goal so far this season is because Daniel Levy failed to sign Gonzalo Higuain. No, I'm not making this up. He actually said it.<laugh>

In case anyone is still interested - the reason we didn't get Isco is because we wouldn't pay his wages for the season!
    Just saying.
