    Ok, enough fun for now.

As you know, once a player is cup tied he can not play for any other Club in the competition that season.

The one time that I know of when this rule was relaxed was in 1958 following the Munich Air Crash which wiped out so many MU Players.
MU were allowed to play Cup tied players they bought in.

One of these had won winners medals with NUFC and Blackpool and went on to play for MU in the Final which they lost.

    This was Ernie Taylor. (ET)
Sunderland born, 5 ft 4 ins just like Bobby Kerr.
He joined us in December 1958

Thanks for joining in the fun Gentlemen.
    I hope you enjoyed it.

    Sorry NO.

Raich was born in Noble St, in Hendon rather than near Roker Park.

Coming back to the Ernie Taylor part, one of the rumoured reasons he came to us in '58 was that he would get a coaching job when he retired and this did not happen.

Yeah. But I worked it out based on 83 saying it was to do with the Munich disaster, using a book, and then consulting our mutual friend Mr. G. Oogle.

I wasn't that sharp but it stands to reason when you think about it. Love a good football trivia question, me!

Only just read this thread and got the answer straight away from the Munich disaster clue, I remember this event well, and I spoke about Ernie Taylor in a thread a few days back on here, him having worked in Sunderland before he turned professional at the same place I started on leaving school. Good question though. <ok>

    Random fact.

Today in 1959 Ernie Taylor got 2. In a 5-1 win over Sheff Utd at Roker Park.

    I love statcat me.

    Its a great site,
I would have been at that game, but honestly can hardly remember Ernie playing for us, but I remember him playing in the Cup run for Man U. And I mean 5-1, just a regular score for us in those days <laugh> , but what I can recall is us, as a struggling second division side put seven past Celtic one afternoon,( Barca style!), it was some kind of friendly, Celtic players didn't turn up that day, but their "supporters" certainly did in their thousands, all nice and friendly in the pubs around the town centre on the Saturday night, all chat and bonhomie, Harry Lauder reigned, no hint of what lay in store, as the Town Hall clock struck 10, it all kicked off. Fists and missiles rained, town center mayhem ensued, what a night. Imagine the news reaction to-day, but not then, things were kept in perspective, just a normal saturday night out for our friends from North of the border. Happy Days.
I am by the way part Scots, and admire their spirit, so no prejudice in this report. <bubbly>
