The reason Wenger said that Arsenal were a club that has the qualities he loves, is because unlike PSG, Chelsea, City. Arsenal haven't simply bought their success.
Thats probably why in the last 12 seasons, they have had no success. Every team that wants to sustain success these days has to pay the piper. Leicester proved you can sneak in the odd trophy if everything magically clicks, but to sustain it? This is why Arsenal have never retained the league title as well. Yeah you will win an FA cup every now and then on the cheap, but not the PL , and certainly not the CL, where money talks.
We won the FA cup twice in a row the year before last and the one preceding that. So it's not true that we've had no success. Overall though, I agree that if you want to keep up with the big spenders, then you have to match them. As sad as that situation is.
Was more talking about the league, but yeah, thats the way things are in football now. Anyway, talking about not buying success, Arsenal spent more money than Chelsea in the last transfer window, I think. (Only by a couple million though).
The money was being spent.....on your board of Directors new 17 acre farm. Seriously though, yeah, its about time. Mustafi looked decent when I saw him. Perez will probably need longer to adjust though, strikers usually do.
Wow, you sound like a Liverpool fan. Absolutely no need to bring out lines like that, we're not that desperate yet.
If you were a rich oil sheikh, bought a fictional top tier team in the prem and could have your pick of the premier league managers to manage said top team, who would you have ranked from 1st to 20th choice? I'd say Wenger just about scrapes into 10th place: 1. Guardiola 2. Mourinho 3. Klopp 4. Conte 5. Pochettino 6. Koeman 7. Ranieri 8. Howe 9. Bilic 10. Wenger 11. Puel 12. Pardew 13. Guidolin 14. Karanka 15. Mazzari 16. Dyche 17. Pulis 18. Hughes 19. Moyes 20. Phelan
Just correcting a common misconception that annoys me. Football clubs are ALL about the history, tradition, present and future. I love my club because of who we are. I will love my club even if we win nothing ever again in my lifetime. I love The Arsenal because of who we are. We are who we are because of our history. And yes, Liverpool should be proud of their history too and I personally have no issue with that.
But that wasn't what you said. "This is why Arsenal have never retained the league title as well" I don't see any mention of wenger in that post. The Arsenal are more than Wenger and always will be. Even if he is the most successful manager in our history and has set us up securely for many years to come.
I would have thought that would go without saying that I was referring to Wenger, as this is a Wenger thread. Why would the fact that you retained a league title with another manager, years before, have any relevance? EDIT: Just checked and the last time Arsenal retained the league title as far as I can see was in 1935.....super relevant when talking of Wenger
The thread might be about wenger, but the post is about The Arsenal. You are wrong in that statement. Fact. We (unlike chelsea) won a lot prior to the premier league.
