I was at a sportsmans dinner where Best was one of the guest of honour. The way he told it he was in a hotel bedroom in Monaco with one of his "miss world" girlfriends. They had just won £20k in the casino and his bird was in her night clothes spread out on the bed among all the winnings, room service arrived with a tray containing Champaign and (3) glasses (the waiter was from Ireland), after delivering the Champaign (and not being offered a glass) he turned at the door as he left and said "tell me George, where did it all go wrong"

Yep, does he want to be the best at his trade, world famous and remembered in history. Or does he just want a lovely life for himself where he can do more or less anything he likes and **** the history books.

Well he's stated on many occasions he wants the first option. He claimed he can win the ballon d'or numerous times and with an ego like his I think its pretty clear he wants the history books.

Problem is doesn't look like he wants to put the effort in to actually do that, thinks it'll all just happen because of who he is.

Maybe, or maybe he just likes to talk big to keep his profile/wages high.

It's a shame about Mario - I remember watching him during a cup game with Palace. We were losing up until HT and he came off the bench and changed the game.

Physical and technically - he has everything. Unfortunately, he's lacking in arguably the most important aspect which is mentality.

Even if he did stay, I can't see how he would start, same as Danny Ings. We have Sturridge, Origi and Firmino who are the preferred options as CF.

The English media were quick to mention Bravo's mistakes but Joe Hart's clanger on his debut seems to have gone unnoticed ...

It was on the BBC sport website to be fair, Torino also got his name wrong on the team sheet calling him John Hart.

I never saw Pele nor Maradonna 'live', but as an 8 year old I saw Best at Anfield. I was in the Paddock with my uncle, and I was standing on one of those box thingys. In the Paddock you could really see the pace and control of the game.

He wasn't really arsed to be honest, and every time he went near the ball three or four players took a chunk out of him, but... he went on one run right by us, receiving the ball, dipping his shoulder and swivelling his hips, and all without needing to look at the ball once. Even at speed and twisting and turning his touch on the ball was featherlight yet it never seemed to get six inches away from his foot. No other United player kept up with him so he just wellied it from the final thirty yards, missing badly.

He wasn't bothered to try again, despite the chiding of Charlton and the several United fans around us (different days in the early 70's). On monday I went into school and tried several demonstrations in the yard of what he'd done, tripping over myself every time I tried. I truly haven't seen such grace and balance from any player (and touch) since, but my cousin was there that day and went to Rome in '90 to see the Italy/Argentina semi final and said Maradonna was even better live and close up, but even he didn't have the floating, ballet-like grace of Best on the run.

I scoff at those who say some footballers are 'natural' - why the **** would evolution do that? So that we could hunt bison with a dribble and swerving finish? But some people are born with natural attributes that suit the game, and then put in the 10,000 hours as a kid that Gladwell refers to. Just like some musicians and dancers, people with the natural attributes who become obsessed with something make it look ridiculously easy when they become the finished article. Best was such a person.

Man Utd paid off Van Gaal over £8m

Add that to the £5m they gave Mourinho not to take another job after being sacked, that's £13m for people to NOT work for them

Can you chuck a slice of that my way, I'll glady never work for Man Utd for the rest of my life for a mere £100k <cheers>
