Sunderland manager David Moyes has held critical discussions with wantaway defender, Lamine Kone, withThe Telegraph claiming that the centre-half could renew his contract with the Black Cats.

The Ivory Coast international moved to the Wearside club in January and played an essential role in helping the Stadium of Light outfit stay in the Premier League.

Kone’s impressive performances led to speculation that other domestic rivals could move to land the African enforcer, with it publicised in the press that Everton had a number of offers rejected for the star.

With the Paris-born 27-year-old said to see his future away from Sunderland, the club’s fans were expecting the worst over their star defender.

However, the latest report suggests that Kone could well be convinced to extend his deal and upgrade his terms with Moyes’ men, which would facilitate the end of transfer speculation and back into the North East supporters’ favour.

Sunderland defender Lamine Kone close to new contract after Everton move blocked
DAVID MOYES is confident Sunderland defender Lamine Kone will sign a new contract within days.

And the Black Cats’ chief believes the centre half has drawn a line under recent events which saw him told to stay away from the club after rejecting an improved deal and demanding a move away from the Stadium of Light.

Kone’s head was turned after Everton tabled an £18m bid for the Ivory Coast international who only joined Sunderland from Lorient in the New Year.

His agent claimed the club had reneged on a verbal agreement to tear up his £40,000 per week contract and pay him £70,000 after he played a key role in the Black Cats escaping relegation.

Moyes dug his heels in, turning down Everton’s offer, insisting Kone stayed put.

The player was restored to the team and played well in the 1-1 draw at Southampton a fortnight ago and on Monday will come up against the club who tried to sign him.

The club has handled this very well (not just Moyesy . . . . it sounds right, but doesn't 'Moyesy' look stupid when written down:cheesy:), and I hope that Toney Koney realises what a twat his parasite is now :emoticon-0105-wink:

It could've been an absolute nightmare scenario but he has been superb in the entire situation. Think he's endeared himself to some who weren't keen on him in the first place (although still not my Dad!) in the way he's handled this scenario. If the numbers mentioned above are right and Kone is currently on £40k - I can;t work out his complaint?

He was reportedly on £11k a week at Lorient - now on 4 times that and he complains about a payrise? These footballer want to try working for the NHS!

I like having these no nonsense managers at the club like Allardyce and Moyes. At no point did Moyes lose his rag about it publicly but he also took no **** from Kone whatsoever and also let it be known how ridiculous he found it all just with his facial expressions.

The players being aware that the club and management come before them is crucial to success, Mourinho's recent season at Chelsea proved that.

As others have said, the club and Moyes have done a good job on this one. I just hope they have performed to the same high standard regarding Mvila.

Your dad sounds like Captain Mainwaring, just an observation..<ok>

Totally agree but being on the receiving end of the NHS cuts and I hate to say it, total incompetence at times through many divisions, that would leave you speechless at the organisation and communication of these so called professionals, you want to try working with the NHS as a patient..

You can virtually guarantee this fella is going to have an impact on the game tonight.

I'm hoping it'll be by spooning one into his own net rather than rising like a salmon to nod one in from a set piece.

But Stones won;t be dawdling about to play him onside from the knock back this time so the repeat of the volley won't happen

Absolute nightmare for my girl, Cerebral Palsy with a totally wrecked body now and totally bed bound at 37..

I can not knock the main people here but the support system in the NHS is basically abysmal, from appointment making, hospital transport and just basically the communication of needs of a patient.

I could go on here as my wife's needs go off the norm but a time and a place maybe, not here or now, we have a game to win tonight..<ok>

Sorry to hear that mate. I wasn't trying to compare our situations btw., I know yours is far worse but I had problems with the NHS. Let's get on with the match
