It was a medium sized job in my opinion but had the potential to develop into a larger and more serious incident. The crews did extremely well to contain it to the degree in which they did as high rise fires are notoriously difficult to tackle, especially for the initial crews. Thankfully no one was hurt. The cause of the fire was a faulty Indesit tumble dryer.

I wonder whether that tumble drier was made in Italy, Poland, Russia, Turkey or the UK, where Indesit manufacture. Some brands really do have problems, Hotpoint too I think. My neighbours dishwasher caught fire a few months ago, Hotpoint I suspect, luckily he caught it early.

    It's why I buy German white goods:emoticon-0105-wink:

I think Indesit and Hotpoint are subsidiaries of Whirlpool Corp and have manufacturers all over the world. I believe that most Indesit goods are manufactured in Italy but I'm not 100% on this. We have just had our Hotpoint dryer replaced by them in a recall scheme due to a fault in our previous one.

When I was in the Brigade I would say that almost a third of the domestic fires I attended would be caused by white goods. I would advise everyone to never leave any of them on when you go out and never put them on and go to bed and leave them running. I've lost count of the amount of people we've had to drag out of their houses in the middle of the night. You'd be surprised how many dishwashers catch fire as well as dryers and washing machines.

Surely this is not right though Nines, if you buy an appliance it should be safe to use irrelevant of the time of day

You'd like to think so mate. Unfortunately I've seen enough of these incidents involving white goods to know that you never leave them unattended. There's at least one fire a day in London alone caused by a household appliance. Have a read of this ...

Thanks for the information Nines, it has certainly made me think. Fortunately we don't have a tumble drier which appears to be the worst culprit. Safe to say your advice has been heeded.

Pretty ironic washing machines and dishwashers catching fire when they are full of water for much of the time when they're working.....

Slightly off topic 999's what difference does the time of day make to an appliance catching fire. Surely, it could happen equally day or night, I understand the consequences would be far greater if the fire took hold when the premises is unoccupied. Does the brigade suggest never leaving the appliance unattended? I will have so much fun explaining that one to the Mrs! My washing machine has a setting to specifically allow me to set the wash to start at 5:00am so that it is all done & ready to hang out when I get up at 6:00am.

I would say that the golden rule is to be awake and not too far from any appliance while it is doing its stuff.

Sorry mate, I didn't intend to make it sound as if an appliance was more likely to catch light at night. It can happen at anytime. It's more dangerous to put an appliance on before going to bed ( many people do ) because people tend to be asleep and the consequences can be devastating if a fire is not discovered at an early stage. Without turning the thread into a fire safety one I'd just like to say that make sure you have a working smoke alarm on every floor of your house and site it where it will wake you if it actuates.

Hoops Eternal has made a very good point in the post above.

Mrs Maple will not leave a dryer, particularly a dryer, running if we are out. I used to think we were being overly cautious but on the basis of this thread that issue won't need to come up again

With reference to smoke alarms I heard a very good piece of advice several years ago that I rigidly follow. We can never remember when we last changed the battery in our smoke alarm, so change it every year on your birthday and test it at the same time.

Good advice Hoops E. Those type of fire alarms are now becoming obsolete thankfully. You wouldn't believe the amount of premises that we had gone into and the occupant had removed the battery because of the annoyance they cause when they keep going off due to cooking etc. The new ones on the market are now sealed units that come with a 10 year battery installed. The Fire Angel brand is the one that I would recommend as they have an intelligent detection system that can differentiate between steam and carbon smoke particles. They also have a one button do it all function that you can press should it actuate due to burnt cooking of toast and the like. If you give your local fire authority a call they will come to your house and give you a fire risk assessment and fit smoke alarms throughout your house all for free.
