It was widely quoted at the time that Ash was the first player to achieve the feat, I'm fairly sure no one has done it since - big thanks to Jan Molby for recognising a future legend.
Yeah he is. Before we achieved the multiple promotions there was a very short list of people who had ever played for the same club through promotions in all four divisions and none of those had ever captained the side in all four divisions. People do however get carried away with the wording of this, as he wasnt club captain during the first promotion season, yet he did captain us that season when Whittle didnt play. The distinction has to be recognised and words chosen carefully when stating the feat.
I didnt even think but that's a fair point, I'm 40 and I look younger than him. I think. I also would never even contemplate for a second wearing that tie with that shirt.
Yeah exactly - you need to say he captained the club. You cant say he was club captain when we were promoted through all the divisions.
Out of interest, does anyone know roughly how often he did captain the side in 2003/04? I can't even picture him playing without an armband - it just seems wrong. I recall Whittle was a first choice centre half for most of that season so if Ash only deputised for him it can't have been that often? Anyway, didn't Alan Tate at Swansea do something similar? I know it's been discussed on here before but I can't remember how his achievement differs from Ashbee's.
