History will show that Gerrard did stay for another 10 years though. What you've got to remember he was one of the worlds best midfielders and had Chelsea, Real Madrid, Inter etc. all knocking on the door offering him ridiculous money and the promise of regular trophies. Our only real ambitions at the time were to qualify for the CL each season. I believe he was also struggling with the attention and pressure on him being a local lad representing Liverpool, too, and partly wanted to leave because he wanted to get away from the weight of expectation on his shoulders.

I don't think they really enjoy sticking the boot in, I think they do support Liverpool and want us to do well. When you look at your list the ones who talk positive about us aren't national pundits, they are people who appear on LFC TV, Liverpool Echo/DailyPost etc. which means their stuff is directed at Liverpool fans only, so they can afford to be a little more biased. The pundits on national TV can't afford to be seen as biased and have to remain neutral because of the audience the stuff is directed at.

Best penalty taker I've ever seen. Truly don't understand the other stuff. But I don't blame him, I blame the ****ing 'Committee'. He was just an idle version of Benteke.

No doubt Gerrard and Carra are legends of the club - Carra was loyal and a big leader in defence and Gerrard was a world class player.

I loved them as players but as mentioned, I lost respect for them when their influence grew too large and they ultimately forced Rafa out to push their own agendas.

Sacking Rafa and appointing Roy in his place is the worst footballing decision this club has made and ultimately led to our downfall. And they played massive parts in that.

And this was the biggest example of how biased fans and pundits were against Mario.

Rodgers later stated that Mario was the designated penalty taker.

That was probably the beginning of the end at Liverpool but it was hardly unexpected. You would have struggled to get a bookie to take your bet on that outcome with his M.O. He was given more benefit of the doubt at Liverpool than from anybody watching from the outside. We were like battered wives insisting, "He promised he'd change!"

I don't think there's a debate to be had, he is and has always been a poor player.

As Linus said to Charlie Brown 'there's no heavier burden than a great potential'.

In terms of his playing style, effort, or lack thereof, maybe there's no debate but in terms of Carra's tweet I still believe it was uncalled for. Balotelli didn't sign himself to us, it was a contract between two parties. We got what we paid for. Balotelli has no blame in this. He is what he is.

It's debatable whether we paid £16m for 28 appearances and four goals. Kind of feared, yes; paid for, not really.

But let the buyer beware and it's not like Which Striker magazine hadn't already given the product a 2-star review.

I meant more in terms of we paid for a [debatable] lazy, mischief-making, fun loving joker - we got a ......

As for his goal return, that isn't actually all that bad considering those appearances weren't full appearances. I accept and respect everyone on here's views on him. I just have a different one.

Totally agree about Rafa. That though was surely down to the club though?
I think as a club we tend to be a bit sentimental about our - a) local players and b) legends. As much as i dont like Ferguson, he was a very good manager and generally he knew when it was the right time to let go.

Downfall of what? We sacked Rafa when we finished 7th and finished 6th the following season. Despite the hapless Hodgson's disastrous first half of the season.

That is an indication of how poorly Rafa was doing at the club that we managed to sell Mascherano, Torres (in January, though he might as well not have been there from August onwards) and lose Gerrard for half the season with his groin (?) injury, only play football from January onwards and still finish in a better position than we did under Rafa.

Lets also not forget that Rafa is now in the championship. He is not a messiah that would've led us back to glory if he was given an extra season. The reality of the situation is, Rafa's position was untenable because he made us almost impossible to buy due to his abrasive nature, his huge contract (costs lots to get rid of an under-performing employee on a huge contract, £6m IIRC) and the fact his relationship with over half of the squad had turned to **** due to his mind boggling decisions (Torres pulled off for Ngog at Birmingham when 0-0 springs to mind) and lack of man management

To be fair to Tellytubby he didn't score a lot of goals but he scored big ones. Big goals against Ludogorets, Besiktas and Spurs.
