It could be more the case that the hardcore left and formed their own football club. Without the hardcore's fire the anamosity died away IMHO.
They were the clubs debts not his and he received very good interest on the loans from the club. I would not mind betting that when they do a post divestment review they will be very happy with the returns they have had over the period of their ownership.
