I first encountered both when I lived in Germany in the mid 70s and Norwich now has 2 Lidl shops and 3 (soon to become 5) Aldi stores. When they first opened a lot of people avoided them because of where they are located in the city, but you now see some very expensive cars in the car parks. Aldi now do home delivery on some of their 'Special Offers'. They don't offer 4 different varieties of baked beans etc - it's take it or leave it.
Another thing that many people don't realise is that meat from Lidl is British yet you can buy Premium 5% fat steak mince 500gm for just £2.99, family size chickens for under 4 quid, 400gm diced beef £2.69 ! You can practically double those prices in the big four supermarkets
I've heard and read about it taking over Poundstretcher. Which would be a shame. It sounds crap from the name, but did really good cheap stuff. If it came down to wanting it to stay or for a Lidl to open. 100% Lidl. Keep saying to the gf, we need about 1 or 2 more Supermarkets here. There are sites EVERYWHERE in Wymondham. Every way I can get out of my house. Massive building site. I'm worried about the traffic, but also the amount of people doing a weekly shot at 2 Supermarkets. Lidl would be great. I still think we will/should get another somewhere soon.
Well, since Lidl opened a store in Cromer, I try and use it as much as poss. Trouble is with no wheels it's a bit of a hike - especially with 6 bottles of their wine which is brilliant value and I always invest to make it worth going. Muscadet (Crisp dry Loire valley French for the benefit of non wine drinkers) was below £3 a bottle in summer! And their Cimarosa own label range of varietals are all circa £4 - £4.50 and very reliable - some are brilliant. Meat, fish, in-store baked fresh bread and pastries, fruit & veg...and the best for me (as they're of eastern European origin) is the range of unusual cheese (French Comté ...WOW!) extra mature Manchego etc. And meats like Pâté, salami, pastrami, prosciutto ham etc are ludicrous a) quality and b) value Plus the most divine, freshly roasted pistachios served from a huge bin (£1 per 100 gm)where you scoop what you want into a bag and get it weighed at the checkout. I invariably spend £4-5 on some of those - the best I've had from anywhere ever No, I'm not on commission either Sorry, got a bit over-exuberant there
I buy most of my meat at the butcher next to Aldi on Dereham Road - only slightly more expensive but fantastic quality. Topside has been £2.99 per lb for a couple of months now - tastes delicious cooked medium rare.
I work at a lot of places Dereham Road. As soon as I hear they name I am filled with dread. I hate that road. Depends howfar you are down it, but where I have to work...It's disgusting!
Just saw this...and saw my whole life flash in front of me I can't face a 'main' meal before 8 or 9 p.m. so if I don't correspond for a few days (or a lot longer) you'll all know why! What about people that pile into he local tandoori after the pubs kick out on a Friday night? please log in to view this image
I do like to try and finish eating by about 7pm, but doesn't always work out that way. A friend of mine regularly goes for a curry about 9pm!!!
He's been doing it for years, so is unlikely to change. I'm going for a 'veggie Curry's in a couple of weeks the table is booked for 830!!!
Good spot General!!!! I quite like the veggie curries and Norwich now has 2 curry houses dedicated to only vegetarian dishes!!!
Not at all, Every second I could waste on breakfast at home is precious duvet time sleeping off the preceding days ale. Bah!
Namaste next to Thai kitti certainly smells good, I've just never found a vegetable that satisfies in taste and texture like a good tender piece of Lamb or succulent piece of chicken. That's just me though, I like veggies, well most of them not them sprout bastards! But most just not as much. Bah!
Que? A roast meal sans Brussels sprouts and roast parsnips is not even worth turning the oven on for!
