http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/sport/14...cs_in__able_bodied__controversy/?ref=mr&lp=13 GB athlete quits Paralympics over classification of disabilities....which will be reviewed after Rio. Admirably, she has pulled out of Rio so she can speak out on her concerns. She feels GB is selecting less disabled athletes in order to boost medal chances. I admire all these athletes and what they have overcome and what they achieve....they are all winners. However, whilst some sports have a relatively level playing field, I find it hard to care who wins a medal in some events where the disabilities vary so much. You can have swimmers with no arms competing with swimmers with missing hands for example. I don't know what you can do about it as you can't have hundreds of events to cater for all disabilities but some events just prove oranges are better than apples.
Doesn't bother me that Mother Theresa has become a saint. She'll sign for Liverpool soon and we'll make loads of money out of it.
Sorry don't agree . Steve Irwin was a man who made a career out of pissing off wildlife , in the end , it cost him his life .
I'm somewhere in between, his ideas on emphasising habitat protection and endangered species conservation were right on, but he was aggressive in his treatment of animals as a sales tactic. Although, any zoo (mainly American) who force animals to do live-shows for entertainment are just as bad. In my view wild animals shouldn't be kept in captivity unless it is necessary in order to preserve their species. But then having been to Marwell zoo probably 100 times as a child how else would we get to see these fascinating animals in person? Safari? David Attenborough shows?
Fair comment . I agree about the zoo's , though I do think places like Marwell do a lot to try and help wildlife .
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/37272378 Murray saying that he has been inspired by the young GB players coming through as he feels he has to work even harder to set an example for them when practicing. I know he said last year that he was disgusted to turn up at the LTA state of the art centre and find not one player there who was willing to help him practice....he thought it was under utilized and players should be encouraged to go there more. I can see Murray getting involved in youth development (like his mother) after he retires...he has very strong feelings about the failures of the LTA.
Why should we need to see them in person at all? They shouldn't be preserved for the benefit of humanity, but for their own benefit and that of the planet. By all means have wildlife programmes on TV so that we can marvel at nature's wonders, but leave nature to itself, and shut the zoos down.
I know and agree. It's because humans are selfish so we want to see them in person, obviously a much greater experience for us rather than seeing them on tv. There are zoos that are helping with preservation of species'
Did lots of conservation work in areas in Australia. Had to make an interesting tv show to fund his other animal based interests. If he's pissing off nature I'd like to hear your views on what projects like HS2 are doing to it.
Yes, I agree that zoos can provide vital education, research, and breeding functions that can't be done in other ways, and that zoos aren't just there to entertain the public these days. Not in this country anyway. I do suspect that there are places where animal welfare isn't at the top of the agenda though, especially places like Seaworld. It's the concept of using animals to provide a public spectacle that turns my stomach.
