Dean Saunders is a very good deliverer of a story, he was at the KC last season and was extremely funny.

What's the British transfer record element he keeps going on about? He signed for Forest towards the end of his career for far from a record fee. Or did he not actually sign for Forest on the occasion of this story?

It was when he signed for Liverpool.
    Copied from Wiki:

During the 1990–91 season he netted 17 league goals but Derby still went down in bottom place with just five league wins all season. Their relegation saw most of the country's top clubs queue up in their bid to capture Saunders' services, and Everton were favourites to sign him, and there were also approaches from Aston Villa's new manager Ron Atkinson, and Nottingham Forest's Brian Clough.[3] Saunders ended up at Liverpool, who paid a then English record fee of £2.9 million for Saunders on 19 July 1991 to make him Ian Rush's new strike-partner following the departures of David Speedie and Peter Beardsley.

Yeah I know he broke the British record then, but he keeps going on about Clough's antics when signing him for a British record fee, like 'oh I can't believe he's doing this when its a record fee'.

Is this Clough story from then? So did he turn them down at the time of this story and then sign for Forest later? Or is this story from when he did sign for Forest?

But that's when the episode took place. As he was leaving Derby he had interviews (if you can call it that) with Everton and Forest before signing for Liverpool. I guess the fee would have been the same whichever club he signed for.

Right yeah that's what I was trying to establish. I was wondering cos he did sign for Forest for a non record fee. If that's the case then it clears it up, cheers.

Was it the Spurs v Forrest final were it went to extra time at Wembley and instead of speaking to the players to prepare them for the extra 30 minutes he stood there yapping to one of the policemen .. think at that point we all knew he was losing it

If, as it appears, Saunders has embellished his story in order to earn a grand or two per booking, then shame on him. Cloughie is a legend, not someone who should be made to look a fool due to an illness that essentially finished him. It's not fair, to either his memory, or to the family and friends that he left behind.

Not necessarily, Big Billy did really take **** in the bath while Andy Payton was sat next to him. No embellishment required.

Unusually for the ****ty Guardian, a good article which rightly frames Saunders as the ****.
A bit like some of the anecdotes about Billy Whitehurst, which make him out to be just a defecating Desperate Dan-type blockhead
