I've never felt the need to say where I'm from. I leave that to the weak and shallow that think it proves something.

The debate is about the EU. Bizarrely, some think making a discussion personal somehow hides their inadequacies and the weakness of their argument.

Stan, mate. Look around, take your time. My first idea when I decided I didn't want to work anymore, but didn't fancy spending my retirement freezing my arse of over there, was The South Of France. I did look in both Provence and The Dordogne. Problem, at the time, was value. Prices had gone crazy and they were asking 100's thousands for derelict farmhouses in the arse end of nowhere that needed even more spent on them. Secondly, not warm enough in winter.

On to Portugal and The Algarve. That I did like. Saw some very nice places and very nearly bought there. I'm not a golfer though and a lot of what's there is very gold orientated. I Also wanted to look around Spain first.

Costa Del Sol. Not my sort of place. It doesn't mostly feel like Spain. And places like 'yer Marbella' are dreadful, IMO. Full of 'diamond geezers' from Essex and Russian gangsters. And the bling!.

I finally settled on where I bought as it has pretty much everything I wanted. It's quiet and civilised, but still within easy reach of all facilities. One of the most beautiful beaches I've seen anywhere is just 10 minutes away. Near enough for simple access, yet far enough that I don't get all the noise and madness this time of year when seemingly half of Spain comes down for their holidays!

I also wanted it to feel Spanish. To experience a different culture, pick up the language, etc, which I speak pretty well now. My neighbours are mostly Spanish, although there are some other Brits, plus Germans, Dutch, Swiss, amongst others.

It obviously depends on what your priorities are. But certainly, if you're intending to find a place where you want to live, it's a big decision. Take your time and look around.

 

The pool is approx 30ft x 15ft. Plenty big enough for even Yorkshire blimps to splash around in.

I'll leave Stan to respond to your comments about him. From what he knows about you, they should be interesting!..
