We were a very strong side but we will always lose top class players to the likes of Real and Barca - United won the CL and Ronaldo still went to Real.
It's not like me to side with Jimmy but he's right. Alonso was great in his first and last season with us. He was with us for five seasons though.
Not sure Jimmy..I think because Alonso at the time wasn't great he'd learnt to love the club..think it was Rafas worst and fatal mistake.

Alonso had two in five very good seasons but it was also Rafa's biggest error trying to sell him.
Maybe countered by his greatest signing? Reina, Mascherano and Torres would argue otherwise of course.

Rafa trying to buy Gareth Barry was the problem. Villa put a price on his head and Liverpool were not willing to pay.

Comes down to whole sell to buy. In order to finance move for Barry needed to generate money through player sales rather then the board just letting us spend money.
Alonso wasn't great season before Rafa tried to move him on, yes he had bad injury but didn't stand out and Barry was playing very well for Villa. Unfortunately Alonso went had his best season after that and then here was no chance to stop him moving.. Could say trying to sell him gave him a bit of motivation to prove a point.
