Seen something like that before, it looks good at the beginning and the end but in the middle it's just a mess. I could do better than that with some mecano and a bag of sand.
Swiss prosecutors have told the BBC they are investigating German football legend Franz Beckenbauer as part of a corruption inquiry. In March, football's world governing body Fifa began looking into six men for their part in Germany winning the rights to host the 2006 World Cup. Swiss prosecutors now say they have launched their own investigations, linked to that of Fifa. Mr Beckenbauer, who headed Germany's bid, has denied corruption. Last October, he said he had made a "mistake" in the bidding process to host the competition but denied votes had been bought. Germany beat South Africa 12-11 in the vote, which took place in July 2000. Germany's Spiegel magazine reported on Thursday that the investigation centred on payments made from 2002-2005 that added up to more than 10m Swiss francs (£7.7m; $10.2m). Further details are expected to be released by Switzerland's attorney-general later on Thursday. It is not yet known how many football officials are being investigated in Switzerland. In March, it emerged that six men were being investigated by Fifa's ethics committee: Franz Beckenbauer: Former vice-president of the German Football Association (DFB), president of the 2006 World Cup local organising committee (LOC) and former member of the Fifa executive committee Wolfgang Niersbach: Former president of the DFB, vice-president of the LOC and current member of the Fifa and Uefa executive committees Helmut Sandrock: Former secretary-general of the DFB and tournament director of the LOC Theo Zwanziger: Former president of the DFB, vice-president of the LOC and former member of the Fifa and Uefa executive committees Horst Schmidt: Former secretary-general of the DFB and vice-president of the LOC Stefan Hans: Former chief financial officer of the DFB and chief financial officer of the LOC Last October, Mr Beckenbauer said he did not give "money to anyone in order to buy votes". But in a statement, he said: "In order to get a subsidy from Fifa [for the organisation of the 2006 World Cup] those involved went ahead with a proposal from the Fifa finance commission that in today's eyes should have been rejected. "I, as president of the then-organising committee, bear the responsibility of this mistake." He captained West Germany to victory as hosts at the 1974 World Cup and was coach when they next lifted the trophy, in Italy 16 years later. The former defender went on to manage French side Marseille and German giants Bayern Munich, where he is now honorary president.
The value of the pound has jumped after a survey indicated the UK's manufacturing sector rebounded sharply in August. The Markit/CIPS purchasing managers' index (PMI) for the sector rose to 53.3 in August from July's figure of 48.3. A figure above 50 indicates expansion. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-37242804
I can't even go near it now man, it'd ruin me with the meds I take. Glad I never got hooked, but glad I had so many good times also.
The press made a big fuss about this when it went down to 48.3 last month. I hope they make as big a fuss about it now its back over 50!! But I doubt it. Maybe better on the humble pie thread, but I'll admit to regretting voting Remain now.
Donald Trump's wife has filed a libel suit against a blogger and the Daily Mail over reports alleging she worked as an "escort" in the 1990s. Melania Trump's attorney, Charles Harder, said the reports contained several statements "that are 100% false and tremendously damaging to her personal and professional reputation". Campaigners say they have identified almost 400 refugee children living in the camp in Calais known as the Jungle who are eligible to come to the UK. They are urging Home Secretary Amber Rudd to accept the children - many of whom reportedly have family in Britain. The list is to be handed in at the Home Office, marking the anniversary of the drowning of three-year-old Syrian refugee Alan Kurdi one year ago. The Home Office says it already plans to transfer 150 children this year. Most vulnerable Celebrities including Juliet Stevenson and Vanessa Redgrave, religious leaders and local politicians will gather outside the Home Office later to urge ministers to immediately bring over hundreds of children stranded in the sprawling migrant camp. There are 800 unaccompanied children among some 7,000 refugees living in the camp, according to the campaign group Citizens UK. The group has drawn up a list of 387 who it says are eligible to be transferred to the UK. They include 178 refugee children who have the right to come to the UK under an EU rule known as the Dublin III regulation because of their close family links in the country; and a further 209 eligible under an immigration provision known as the Dubs Amendment. The amendment to the Immigration Act, originally put forward by Lord Dubs, requires the government to arrange for the transfer to the UK and support of unaccompanied refugee children from Europe. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-37249847
