There is no arguement that money hasn't been held back or spent elsewhere. There is a reason that over £1bn has been spent and that is TV money - plain and simple. Now just because that money hasn't gone more toward transfers and wages (I wish a bit more had personally) it doesn't mean anything dodgy is going on. Kat is striving for a sustainable model and is investing to money elsewhere currently. Completely reasonable for fans to want a bit more money spent on players as that helps short term success. And even though I have said myself it would be nice to see more spent on players, I trust the board know what they're doing as it has worked out rather well so far!

But what is it being spent on now? The Academy has its nice buildings - but by all accounts the coaching isn't bringing in worldbeaters from across the country. We were told (by no less than Beefy) that the club were going to buy in talented youngsters to beef it up - but we bought none. The stadium isn't getting any bigger - or any better. In fact, the only thing I can see which the club is expanding into is Beefy's new luxury burgers.

It would be nice to hear where the money is going, that's all. Maybe it is going on setting up soccer schools around the world? That would be cool. Or maybe its all going in the bank as a safety net in case we hit hard times. Yawn.

Spending and paying off debts are not mutually exclusive. The board will have factored in how to repay KL whilst running the club well. No point I returning all the money at once if we get relegated and devalue the club....the same way most sane people manage their finances...pay what you can afford and live at a reasonable level. However, it is best in the end if our debts are cleared. We have a lot of money from various sources, so I suspect the books will balance soon. It will like when you pay off your mortgage and all your income is yours....bloody marvellous.

Believe me after a lifetime of paying bills, it is fantastic to have a nest egg and no money worries. Nothing boring about it. My son loves it that I am in that position. :(

Yes, but let's not kid around. We don't know KL. She isn't going to send me ten quid at Christmas no matter how prudent she is with the weekly shop!

Not all transfers come off, due to many reasons. We have been after Redmond for about 3yrs, but could only signing him this year.

All figures based on rough guesswork but it's the principle:

There's one player whose salary I'm prepared to guess, Jose at around £4.2m a year. I know he's meant to be top earner but it doesn't take a great many copies of him to spend £86m.

Sponsorship last year was around £1M, so trivial. Seat sales. £1.2M per home match (30,000 @ £40)? £23M (That's turnover, not profit).

    Out of that:

I'm sure I read somewhere that Saints have 250 or so employees. At £40K including just some (to avoid double counting) overheads, that's £10m gone.

There's a ground to maintain and a training complex as well. Imagine the cost of a scissor lift to do ANY work on the outside of the ground.

I can say with a degree of certainty that just window cleaning at the ground (not including Staplewood) is about £26,000 a year. Bet that's not an amount anyone ever thinks about. That's just under a quid of your seat price for one home game. On clean windows, for heaven's sake.

And an academy to run (I believe some of the kids are on a few thousand a week), housing to be paid for.

And all that is with ten minute's thought. Bet I've missed a great deal.

It wouldn't surprise me if we don't make a great deal of day-to-day profit.

Maybe Katrina had to pay an overdraft off elsewhere?
Would you rather be financially astute as we are or a risk taker that ends up selling to a phantom Arab?

Be careful what you wish for, I said previously that I believe we've peaked for the foreseeable future. There's nothing wrong with future proofing what we already have.

My problem is that someone once said to me to enjoy life, as there was no point in being the richest man in the cemetery. No fear that will happen ;)

If Man U or some other big club spends their way into a hole, the FA will help them out, maybe even the government.

If Saints spend their way into a hole, no one will do a thing.

That is why we have to keep a tighter rein in spending. Just one of many ways the game is rigged.

I do agree with everyone to an extent, and I am not a risk taker in my own life, but I don't follow football to admire the accounting! :D

And so far clubs run by dodgy arabs are winning a lot more than we are...

Well, as I've said before, their money can disappear just as quickly as it appeared.

The oil price is low enough that the Saudi governments is issuing bonds and has cashed in $60Bn in six months via sales of foreign assets. If the oil price stays low (and it looks likely given US production) then one day the money won't be there. What hits Saudi, which has the lowest production-cost oil on the planet, will hit the other oil states sooner or later. As for the Chinese money, analysts based in China tend to think that the string of purchases represents a bubble. Source: http://www.economist.com/news/business/21705862-china-and-beautiful-game-winging-it

Sustainability may be dull but in a few years things could become very exciting indeed for clubs that don't nail it.

I see your point SS. Maybe nice guys do finish last but I cling to the hope that we are building steadily. I will request to be thawed out in 2090 when our planning finally comes good
